    DBS Query

Hi, I am looking to get a DBS done. I have been told two different things. One said you need to have a job offer before you can get a DBS as you need to put the employers details in. Another has said you can apply for a DBS without a job offer and you can use it for any job. Does anyone on here know anything about it please? Thanks

Does it depend which level? I got a basic one, paid £25 and arrived within a week. Didn't need it for work or put any work details on

You can offer to pay an additional amount of money (£13) to sign up to the update service to make your DBS portable.

Easiest way to get one us to volunteer for a school and then pay the extra £13. Not all schools DBS volunteers though, as it is not a requirement, and can be risk assessed. Most do though.

If you're going to have any unsupervised contact with children at the school and they don't do a DBS on you, then they're being negligent. They need to have a central register of anyone who has contact with the children and details of their DBS check - failure to do this will get them clobbered by Ofsted.

That is exactly what I've done, volunteering, but I've been told that DBS is just for that school, so I'm not sure. Very Confusing

I know, but some jobs state you must have a current DBS before they will even consider you, but then I was told you need to have a firm offer of employment before you can apply for a DBS, so I'm confused. Thanks

Do you have any idea on how to apply for a DBS where you don't need to include any employment details please?

It's disclosurescotland.co.uk google it and go to that web site. It's for UK (not just Scotland. You need to upload a photo of driving license or passport / photo ID and a bank statement/ utility bill and pay £25 for basic.

You are partially correct - unsupervised contact needs a DBS.

Volunteers who don't have unsupervised contact need a risk assessment, which will determine if a DBS is necessary. Most schools will DBS anyway (as a DBS for a volunteer is only charged an admin fee, and there is often risk of short, unsupervised contact), but some will allow them to work (supervised) under the risk assessment while waiting clearance. Others will just risk assess it.

As long as the measures in the risk assessment are followed, OFSTED will be perfectly happy.

It is usually your employer or agency who applies on your behalf with your details and the payable fee filled by you

Disclosure Scotland and DBS are totally different and shouldn't be confused.

DBS replaced CRB the whole point was to make it easier for employees and employers to transfer a DBS between jobs. The update service is free i believe if you're a volunteer. I don't think you can apply for a DBS on your own an employer or somewhere that you volunteer must apply for it. If you register for the update service you are provided with a unique reference number which employers can use to check the DBS online.

Thanks for the info. The problem I am having is some jobs state you must have a current DBS. If I can't apply for one on my own, how can I get one without having a job? However, it says I need one before I can even be considered?
    Thanks again

Speak to the employer and ask them to apply for one. You need a verifier to check your passport and address details.

If you work with children and/or vulnerable adults you will need an Enhanced DBS that can only be taken out through a company or organisation as they will need to verify your identity. The only company details on the application form are the name of the company.

If you are not working with children/vulnerable adults then you are only eligible for a Basic check - you can apply for this yourself.

Thanks for the info. It's just so confusing. The jobs I am applying for say you must hold a current DBS to even be considered, but other people say your employer must apply for it on your behalf: I have done a DBS for volunteering but I believe this is different to a full DBS for full employment. I think I'll have to try to call someone to get to the bottom of it. Thank Again.

If you already have a DBS certificate and are in their update scheme then this is how you apply for jobs requiring a DBS. Its not something an individual can obtain and your DBS for Volunteering isnt applicable to paid employement, you would need to obtain a new one through a company or organisation you work for or are applying to work for.

If you are a volunteer and you've had a DBS check within the last year then I believe that you have a current dbs. When you get a new job, if your dbs isn't 'enhanced' (and if they require this) I would assume that they would get you to do a new one. Perhaps the wording "current dbs required" is just to stop those with unspent convictions from applying...
