Deal Agreed On GB Olympic Football Team

A deal has been agreed on the format of the Great Britain football team for the 2012 London Olympics.

Scottish, Welsh and Irish Football Associations have privately agreed to turn a blind eye to a one-off British team for the Olympic Games.

In return for their co-operation it is thought that the English FA will not ask players outside England to join the team.

"In return for their co-operation it is thought that the English FA will not ask players outside England to join the team."

Madness! If a team is called Great Britain there should be a player from every corner of Great Britian competing in that team. Sounds like Scotland and Wales are right up themselves. It's always been Great Britain at the olympics! (someone will come along now and state we actually competed as individual countries in 1906 )

So it will be an all-England GB team? Why not let Scotland or Wales field players if they make the grade?

It should be the best players from all of Great Britain. But i can't think of any players from Wales or Scotland that would get into the team

None do though

NI aren't part of GB.

True, but they should at least have the option to try out.

Agreed on Gordon actually hes tops

If there is to be a GB football team, it should be made up equally of English, Scottish, Welsh and N.Irish players...or there should be no team at all.

(not NI as not part of GB)

Initially yes - I think that of a squad of 27, 9 players should be picked from England, Scotland and Wales This should then be whittled down to 6 players each to then pick a pool of 11 players + subs. Yes, you won't get the best team but you'll appease all involved. Once people get used to the idea of a British squad, attitudes will change and they'd want the best available from all three nations - regardless of the quantity from each. You can guarantee it will NEVER be an all-England side as I can name at least a dozen Scottish and Welsh players I would have in a full squad.

And to those who think it wouldn't work? Ever heard of the British Lions?

TBH no Welsh or Scotish players would have got into the team anyway so this announcement doesn't really make any difference.

Jumpingphil;5349780

So what do the Americans do, have a player from every state?

Put it into perspective - this is like asking for a team made up of USA, Canada and South America.

Should we make sure we have an equal proportion of races aswell, just to keep all races appeased and involved?

lol, more than likely. No doubt it'll be the next denomination to discuss.

Remember, we've got to keep the PC brigade happy!

I disagree with those that say that a GB Olympic football team must include players from each nation because such a rule does not exist. I'm not aware of any other Olympic team event, such as rowing, cycling or relay-racing etc, where such a rule applies.

It's an opinion, not an actual rule. Personally I'd like to see the best team put together regardless of nationalitiy, but the SFA and LOW don't want to participate.

i'm glad the scottish fa have stuck to their guns. I don't want a british football team.

Oh and to those saying that there isn't any scottish, ni, or welsh players good enough you do realise its an under 23 squad with 2 overage players so I wouldn't be to hasty in predicting a squad for 3 years time.

You only don't want a GB team because no Scots would get into it. That's the only reason Scotland and Wales don't want a team - to save them the embarrassment.

I disagree with that, the welsh have some excellent youngsters coming through

The tournament is for U23's there aren't many decent English footballers floating around at the moment who are under twenty now.

The Welsh always hype up their youngsters, making them sound like they are the next Pele. In recent years the only decent player that has come out of Wales and would have got into the England squad is Ryan Giggs.

right now your probably correct although as there no keepers in england then I suppose craig gordon would have to be used as an overage player and then stevie g. So who would be in the rst of your squad. remember its under 23's?

Well ATM it would pretty much just be the whole England U21 squad + Rooney, Ashley Young, Lennon, Agbonlahor.

BTW Scott Carson is 23 so he could be used instead of Gordon.

If you're going to use an over 23 player on a goalkeeper it would not be Gordon that gets the nod.

To be honest I'm Scottish first and foremost and pure nationalistic pride and a belief that we should be independent makes me wince seeing the likes of andy murray under the banner of team GB. He should be representing Scotland and I just couldn't bring myself to support a team gb in football.

james (calamity) old and not very good, foster 3 games in 12 years at man rules him out, kirkland will be injured.

what I'll give you is green he is maybe on a par with the 2 gers keepers so either one of those 3 would be fine. Personally I'd go with alexander.

-James has got better with age and is better than both the Scots.
-Foster has shown that he has a lot potential and I am sure he will get more games next season.
-Kirkland has played 32 league games this season which is a good return. IMO he is a very underrated 'keeper and I would pick him ahead of Alexander anyday.
-Green has been so constant over the last 2 seasons. He has proved himself to be a quality goalkeeper and it wouldn't surpise me if he was Englands next #1.

Ahh, opinions, not much else to add to that. I agree that if it goes ahead, players should be picked on merit rather than nationality.

Another vote here for Rob Green. He's been outstanding for us
