    Debt Ridden Clubs Face Axe

From 2012, Clubs in considerable debt could be thrown out of the Champions league.

From 2012-13 clubs will have to break even - spending only what they earn - if they want to play in the Champions League or Europa League. This would make it harder for clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City as both rely on their owners to pay players' wages and bring in new talent.

Manchester United would also struggle with huge debts totalling more than £700million, as the new rules state that clubs can have debt but only if it is affordable. In fact the majority of the Premier League would fail to meet the new criteria needed to compete in Europe with 14 of the 20 top flight clubs making a loss in 2008.

What I think they fail to realise is, Manc City could sell a 'special' executive box worth £100million to the sheikh. Problem solved. Might be bad news for some of the debt riddled clubs though

Won't be many in the Champions league that season then.

Can't see them kicking out Man Utd and Real Madrid for starters can you?

p.s best story of the day is David Sullivan going on all week about the past mismanagement of the club in the past leading to it's current position then they are linked van whathisname on £100k a week. You couldn't make it up.

We should be ok then, our debt is minimal .....

This is Mr David Sullivan we are talking about here.

It's classic him, blues fans have heard this crap coming out his mouth for years.

    The guy is a clown.

A thoroughly stupid rule. Real Madrid, United etc. have enough pull to see this doesn't happen.

Cant wait for the headlines in 2012

'Sheikh Mansour sponsors own club for £500million'

'Slur Alex: We CAN win the Carling cup'

But seriously, all the big clubs would just break off and make their own champions league, why would they bother to listen to FIFA ?

Personally I think the Champions league has been the death of our own domestic and cup competitions as well as the other european cups.

Bring back the good old days when only the champions went in the european cup, fa cup winners in the cup winners cup.

Then all the domestic and european cups would be played propely.

As it is the ECL trumps all and no-one really cares about any other cup or title. (apart from the mighty league cup which is a fantastic cup to win)

The real irony is that with clubs like City and the Spuds spending copious amounts of money its finally injected some life and competition back into the premiership, which is all going to be potentially stifled again now.

Having clubs where theowners spends their own money not being able to compete is absolutely ridiculous, you can understand the logic of 'what if the owners jump ship' but in that scenario we sell all our players and go back to square one, its the debt riddled clubs they should be focussing on, they are the one in real danger and the ones that have been severely mismanaged.

Rather than other teams such as City, Spurs, Villa etc having to spend more to catch up (thus placing themselves in debt and danger) the bigger spending clubs should be reigned in (along with players wages etc)

Personally I'd like to see football run like fantasy football, every player has a value and each team has a limit.

Each team would be fairly equal then.

Kids coming through the academy could be given a lower value encouraging teams to get more through the academy and still spend on the big stars if they want to.

+1....I know Arsenal do pay some players to much...but our wage structure is pretty good and in addition we dont throw money about (mainly cos Wenger and our debt).......However the added competion that Spurs Villa, City, and such have added this season has made the prem far more interesting to watch again. Its a catch 22 really....But I doubt they will fully implement these new rules anyway...as someones already pointed out the BIG clubs like united and Real would have to much pull..so if they were not getting their way they would just start a break away competition IMHO

What you fail to realise, is that if this happens (which it won't) loopholes such as the one daft one you suggested, will also be blocked.

700 Mill, wow, they really need to reduce players wages lol

    Supermod

Platinis attempt to get more French teams in the Champions league, no doubt.

It won't be long before the EPL start taking similar action.

That will be a fun day, when the bubble bursts!

oh I agree - not that you are trying, but you can't wind me up with that one - we are in a complete mess off the pitch, and it will end up on the pitch sooner rather than later.

So 2012/13 season looks like it might be the start of the breakaway European Superleague then.

Caspar - your prediction might be right then, as it'll probably be a 2-horse race between you and plymouth for the Premier League title that season
