Old fashioned way would be using a piece of flint.

Any diamond steel. Only about £10-15 now.
Cost me £1 to have my lawn mower blade sharpened at my local shoe menders/key cutter shop (sorry not sure what the shops are called).
They also did knives as well.

Been there, done that, got a blunt knife at the end of it.
Need a fool-proof, talent-proof one.

I bought some Sabatier knives after my parents said they were good....maybe 50 years ago they were a good brand, now they are not. The knives are as blunt as a ducks ass.

I use the bones of orphans and endangered species.

I'm speechless.

Looks fool-proof, will look up some reviews in a bit. Thank you.

A man.

It was a man who sharpened them last time...last time being this evening and we ended up with chunky roast beef as the knife was so blunt no deliciously thin slices could be cut.
It needs a woman's touch and the tools of a master. I'm searching for the latter.

We have one, and it's pants. Possibly due to technique issues, but lets just say, when I suggested above male's technique was poor he got very upset and said 'do it yourself then'. I knew I could do it better but decided his masculinity was worth more than my smugness.

I love this idea, there is a Timpsons in town and the guys are always lovely in there. Not sure if I went to town with a bag of knives how well it would go down, but it might be worth a try.

Do you recon the Any Sharp on eBay listing 180836304035 is genuine?
EDIT: The feedback looks good....at that price it's tempting.

get a new man......if he cant sharpen a knife what else is he unable to do?

pretty sure most places in the uk have mobile knife sharpeners, even locksmith/cobbler should be able to do it.
livsstil.co.uk/ind…797

Had the anysharp for a while then took the plunge on this one, sharpens alot better and doesn't take anywhere near as much material off the knife as the anysharp.

Looks good and reassuring it's used in the meat industry. I'll have a better look later tonight after supper.
Any decent ceramic 'steels' for cheap about? Global seem to recommend ceramic and the global branded one is stupid expensive
I think sancho means a cheaper version of this:

(Had my set of Global Knives stolen amongst other things, they were what I was most upset about )

I know this sounds a bit unusual but have you looked in TK Maxx? They occasionally get global knives in at good prices.
I am a lazy ass and know you can't put globals in the dishwasher so won't get them until the time comes when I can be bothered to wash them by hand.
sickly sweet

Yeah I have seen them in there, usually the big sets with the block, but still expensive.
I haven't seen the single knives in the box though?

I hand wash all ours

They chop and cut so perfectly, a pleasure to use..
I have a huge collection.

Of 1,

Although I'm looking to add a chef's knife at some point, my dad has loads and I enjoy using them, I know some people don't rate them but I quite like the balance of them.

Just want to keep it sharp

£112 here

Lol.

I'm a bit particular when it comes to the kitchen.
I only like Le Creuset stuff and Global knives with some Vom Fass Oil/Vinegar.

They are expensive but worth it, the flexible G19 was my last buy its superb!

Have to be careful though, a lot of fakes about.

Theres a few of those sharpeners on eBay usually a lot cheaper.
Edited by: "doritos" 19th Mar 2012
lol I would spend your £112 on more Global knives before you buy the knife sharpener for just one knife sancho!
I have a full set of global knives, and a global case with the global diamond steel. My excuse was I'm a chef and needed them type :D.

To start out, look for victorianox knives and steel, great way to get going.

I have a lot more Le Creuset than Global Knives

I love them
^^^^ Great choices sancho. I had the 18cm Vegetable Chopper and its JTT worthy (awesome).
I wanted the Santoku as well, I would recommend buying that over either of the Veg choppers tbh as if you have that, you wont need either of the others.

I've got the GS5 mate, its superb.

Just noticed this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shinkansen-Water-Sharpener-Black-Red/dp/B0000A33LJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332239073&sr=8-1

Which I may invest in when I get my next Global.

I'm leaning towards the GS5 as it's shorter, which I prefer

Personally I wouldn't use a £21 sharpener with a £100+ knife but thats me?

Interested in a g2 soon.
All this over a lemon ?

Dont do it sickly! You can always buy more lemons at the shop.
