DELL COMPUTER - REINSTALLING EVERYTHING - a little advice please!

    Hi,

I have a new DELL VOSTRO 400 desktop with a 500gb drive. I wanted it partitioned into 2 partitions of about 230gb each. There's no way I can do this without resinstalling windows is there?

And if i do reinstall on my new DELL - has anyone got any experience of this. Anything I should avoid putting back on? or anything I should try and do?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

You can do this with a partition utility such as Partition Magic. There is always a risk when messing with disk partitions, but assuming you have some degree of competence, it's quite a nice package to use really.

It depends on how the data is stored on the HDD. I know Partition magic can change Partitions without reinstallling.

MIght be worth having a look.

yup as the guys above say partition magic usualy works

a bit more technical, but i'm asuming if you are ready to reinstall windows, you aren't new to the world of computers

If possible check in program for DELL, and create your RESTORE disks, just in case you need to reinstall O/S..
Can phone them too but takes a week or 2

I would suggest back up your data and download updated versions of your drivers, burn to DVD.

then use a partition tool to repartition the disk, I personally would recommend complete reformat, when doing so look for hidden partitions (these wont show up in windows install prompt) and delete them too.

Once you have removed all partitions, you can either partition it with partition magic of the likes then put your OS disk in, or leave it blank and partition with the windows setup (I found that G.Parted left the partitions in such vista didnt like them, so i left the drive clear with G.Parted and used vista setup to make partitions.).

Hi everyone...many thanks for the great advice. i think I'll start by trying those programs out and if it all goes wrong (how would I know??? would i only find out it's unstable later?)...then i can always do my clean re-install. I assume DELL sent me the basic drivers but installed the latest ones? Or is that a bit too hopeful? lol

Also, I was looked around on here and some people have said that some preinstalled DELL stuff is unnecessary and slows the system down. Anything I really don't need from you experience?

    cheers

The question is WHY do you want two partitions of 230Gb, what do you hope to gain by doing that?

There is something to be said for having a "small" partition with Windows on it (say 50gb) and the rest of the disk in another partition for your personal files.

But to be honest I cannot see any benefit of having two partitions of 230Gb.

If everything does wrong you could try the inbuilt dell restore utility (Press Ctr + F11 ) when the pc turns on , runs from a hidden partition and should put your pc back to factory settings & operating system but will delete everything on your HD. Have used this my times on my new desktop not sure if it will be on your laptop though.

That is true. i am thinking of maybe 3 partitions now.

    1. for windows - about 50gb as you said
    2. for running music programs (i'm a musician)
    3. for data/backed up files

and then i have an external drive for the sound files i'm currently working on - in conjunction with the programs on drive 2 above.

    Does that sound about right?

yep, just give some thought to the sizes, best to not have to resize after.

If you dont run any games 50Gb will be fine for vista.

oh dear that wont work at all if he trashes the partition table

    CAUTION
Be careful here, make sure u actually have a os install/system restore disk some systems come without these

i used partition magic tonight and it worked a treat.

many thanks to everyone that wrote with suggestions and cautionary notes. was really helpful.

The first thing to do when buying a Dell machine is format and reinstall windows!!! Get rid off all the bundled Dell junk apps. Should notice a speed increase as the number of active processes fall from 70 with dell to 35 with a clean install

Apart from the third party methods above you can do this all with the Vista install disk. Boot from the Vista disk and press SHIFT+F10.

You’ll want to “shrink” the data on your current c:\ and use the other commands to create new partitions
