Dell laptop dead - Help required

I think my 2 year old laptop has died a horrible death.

With no charger plugged in (but battery full capacity) nothing at all happens when I press the on button.

When I plug the charger (with the laptop off, obviously) in the green led on the charger goes off suggesting something on the laptop is making the charger cut out.

I consider myself fairly profficient at electronics but don't know where to start really.

Have googled and googled but no real help for this problem.

Personally I think the whole things kapput.

If anyone has any ideas / help / giudance it would be much appreciated. I only want to take it to a repair shop as a last resort as it will probably cost more to fix than it will to replace.

Have you tried taking the battery out and in? Check memory (ram) is seated properly? Hard Drive?

what happens with that charger in but the battery out completely?

not only that but try powering it on with the battery removed and just the mains plugged in.

Tried the battery in and out, the laptop doesn't even fire up though so had discounted the hard drive and RAM as being at fault, even if faulty I would have thought it would still start but not run.

I am thinking it is a power supply problem within the laptop as it is tripping the charger when I plug it in.

    Thanks for the help.

No, I think it was left on whilst we were having something to eat, came back to it and it was off and hasn't shown any signs of life since.

Will check RAM anyway though

try that and id also check the dell forums mate tbh it may be specific problem to do with the model/motherboard etc that you have.......dell are pretty good even if out of actual warranty they will advise you

First things first, test the laptop with another charger. Any charger that fits, with a similar Ampere value should work.

If it is not the charger, then the likely cause of the faulty will be the motherboard.

What is your laptop's Service Tag please?

If your wife is missing facebook then your laptop dying has probably just saved your marriage.
