Dell Operating system on a new HD

I am planning to replace the hard drive in my dell laptop and the only discs i have to reinstall the OS is reinstallation onto the original dell HD. Is there any way i can get a disc from dell? OR can i just buy a standard Vista Disc and use my code thats on the bottom of the laptop?

if you have a serial number you can use any Vista DVD to re-install. As far as I know all versions are on every disc, its the serial number that decides what gets installed.

Are you sure the disc you got from Dell isnt a re-branded version of the Vista disc? I got a laptop from them recently and the disc I got was vista with a different label, not HD specific

Don't buy one! 'Borrow' if you can....

its not the full disc, it uses files that are already on the partition to reinstall Windows, im guessing that how it works. it does say its not the whole version on the front of the disc.

I might just put both drives in my desktop and copy the partition to the new drive and see what happens

Well if you can, use trueimage to clone the old drive:thumbsup:

Boot from the disc, you'll know for sure then.

In that case its probably an image file, copying the partition might work, it might not, plus I expect theres a host of Dell software stuffed in there you could do without.

personally I'd borrow a full Vista disc from someone and reinstall that way, just to be sure

thanks for the tips. hoping its the full install on the disc and that its just the dell 'extras' that are 'missing' but will definately try trueimage otherwise. cheers shengis and everyone else
