Dell Vostro 1500 - post-reinstallation of vista

Hi!

I reinstalled Vista basic and all the drivers, media direct etc. Everything seems to be fine apart from one thing: I can't get the scrolling on the touch pad to work! Looked in the obvious places like the mouse settings in the control panel but with no luck. The touchpad isn't listed under "mice and other pointing devices" in the device manager either; there's only a "PS/2 compatible mouse" listed there. Anyone know how I could get this working again? There was a whole menu for this before I re-installed!

Also, anyone know whether there's a cheaper [legal] way to get vista premium/ultimate other than the student version of it?

Thanks in advance!

You need to install the software thats on the driver and resource cd. Same with mine when i installed vista on my new laptop.

Yeh, there are definately specific drivers for its touchpad on the CD. Im sure I saw mention of them in another post (ie dont forget to install them!)

On a seperate issue, has anyone had any problems rewaking the machine after sending to hibernation? (Specifically the LCD screen!)

For the first week, Ive had no problems. Quick press on the power button and on everything cames again. For some reason, this no longer is happening. ie a quick press definately wakes it - I can hear the cogs turning! However the screen doesnt come back to like. Or is it a specific key I should be pressing somewhere? So far, the only solution has been to force shut it down and end up with a "Windows didnt close properly" on reboot.

Annoyingly, my previous Laptop often had the same problem and monitor wouldnt wake.

Is this a laptop thing? Me not doing something right? Or maybe a fault?

Cheers

You want the synaptics drivers here … You want the synaptics drivers here http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

thanks!

You can get an OEM version of vista (£60-£110 depending on which version) from ebuyer although you'll need to purchase a qualifying piece of hardware with it (e.g. a cheap mouse).

Incidentally, did you re-install vista with a DVD that came with the laptop? What I'm trying to ask is, do you get a full vista DVD with dell laptops or do they just come with a recovery partition?

Cheers

You get a full DVD but you have to run the media direct first before you can boot from it for some reason, now if it was posssible to slipstream then id be a happy chappY!

Sorry if I'm being stupid  but I'm not sure what you mean by this harlzter...can't you just point the BIOS to boot from the DVD. Or are Dell's not that simple?!

I've been looking at buying a Vostro because of the cheap 3 yr warranty (any thoughts on that BTW) but would like the option to do a clean install as soon as I get it.

Thanks again!

Mine wouldnt boot from the supplied dell vista disc, but that may be because I deleted the recovery partition to claim back the 10gig! Think it may be more to do with the customised for them vista version they supply,

It should work. Why not just completely reformat the drive and try again.

I did! then set it to boot from cd/dvd and it just told be to insert disc to boot!:x

Hard drive in my vostro 1500 recently went pop, so I stuck a faster 7,200 RPM one in instead (and put the replacement 5,400 RPM one in an external caddy when it arrived). So obviously I had to re-install the OS and I too couldn't get the Dell reinstall disks to work. Probably because I had no restore partition.

Ended up having to use another copy of Vista I had (from my MSDN subscription).

Thanks I thought it was just me and I was losing the plot!
