Deport graffiti Briton for canning! - Would this stop graffiti in the UK!

Briton wanted in Singapore over vandalism

"Under Singapores strict laws many of them altered only slightly from the days of British colonial rule the artist thought to be responsible for 17 years of spray-painted tagging of train carriages could receive several years of imprisonment and eight lashes with a 4ft (1.2 metre) rattan cane. " Times Online

Would this stop it happening in this country! As mentioned above these laws were our old laws that Singapore has kept because they work!

    yes... bring back the birch

Wouldn't fit over here. Whipping isn't exactly an option, we are trying to evolve not go back a few hundred years. Might aswell bring the cane back to schools whilst we're at it.

I personally think Graffiti is just another art form. Shouldn't be seen as destructive or vandalism.

So you wouldn't mind if they came round and spray painted your house then?

Depends who it was - a Banksy would increase the value of your house:thumbsup:

Ha I knew sthis would be the counter-argument. I kind of already do as I have part of my bedroom wall graffitied by asomebody. Looks good though.

If it is artistic then I dont find it a problem but having a chav right 'Petez waaz ere 2k10' needs to be stopped just for having bad taste.

I was talking more about graffiti in general, some of Banks'ys stuff is amazing and sprayed onto plain brick walls yet still gets removed. Still dont agree with being whipped for spraying a wall. Bit excessive.

How big a can will he go into, will they chop him into smaller individual portions? Or leave him whole and allow him air holes?

On a serious note I personally I think canning is OTT, maybe whack him a few times with a crop at the most.

They may go a bit OTT in Singapore, but they don't seen to have the anti-social problems we have! Strangest thing with their society is that its built on our old colonial values... They seem to have taken and then adapted them, then make them work for their modern environment!

Where I agree that graffiti can be an expression and art form, I don't agree with the destructive need for tagging everything! :x

These people also went to Singapore knowing what the punishment would be if there were apprehended, because of this they deserve to face the consequences of their actions!

Completely agree with Singapore's stance on this. I've been and it's amazingly clean even underground. The punishment is a deterrent that works, I'm sure they hardly have to enforce it.

It's zero tolerance policy that works for them, not sure we could ever bring such policy here or if it would even work.

Grafitti to me isn't art, especially not the tagging you see everywhere. If someone has a real talent then there are many methods for displaying that without using private or public buildings to do so.

we are a developed country.....we left this kind of punishment behind with the cane in the 80's

it doesnt help and its a completely different culture in the east

I spent a lot of time in Bristol and there are some great pieces of Banksy's work around. But there are some rubbishy tags too and you can go around the city and see the progression of an artist. It brings the place alive a little bit.

Gang tags I can't stand and there is a lot of rubbish, but it is an artform. It's an outward expression of the individual and often the area too. Hermetically sealed cities are nice, but a little repressed.

Of course it works. The only reason its a story is because it's such a rare occurance.

I never saw any vandalism or Junkies when I've been to Singapore. That suggests to me it works rather well. Lets face it, these scum types are everywhere in the UK.

Wouldnt stop me...The law is messed up here.

All you've highlighted is that they have messed up with the rape case. Causing £100,000s of damage "just for painting some trains" is very much worthy of a prison sentance.

If art make you smile, then fair enough at least bringing out some emotion is better than none at all.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of Indonesia's Riau Islands.

Singapore is the world's fourth leading financial centre, and its economy is often ranked among the world's top ten most open, competitive and innovative. The country is also a highly cosmopolitan world city, with a key role in international trade and finance.

Singapore has a diverse populace of 5 million people made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Asians and Caucasians of various ethnic origins. The populace of Singapore has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners in the world. 42% of the population are foreigners, and these make up 50% of the service sector. The country is the second most densely populated in the world after Monaco. A.T. Kearney names Singapore as the most globalised country in the world in its Globalization Index.

Even before independence in 1965, Singapore was one of the richest states in East Asia due to its strategic location as a port. Singapore's GDP per capita in 1965 was $511, the third highest in East Asia after Japan and Hong Kong. After independence, foreign direct investment into Singapore and a state-led drive for industrialization based on plans by Dr Goh Keng Swee created a modern economy focused on industry, education and urban planning.

Today, the port of Singapore continues to be among the top five busiest ports in the world. The World Bank ranks Singapore as the world's top logistics hub.

Singapore enjoys a very high standard of living. The Economist Intelligence Unit in its "Quality-Of-Life Index" ranks Singapore as having the best quality of life in Asia and eleventh overall in the world. Mercer in its "Quality of Living Survey 2010" ranks Singapore as the best Asian city to live in over its nearest competitor, Tokyo.

Singapore is the fourth wealthiest country in the world in GDP (PPP) per capita terms, and twentieth wealthiest in terms of GDP (nominal) per capita. Despite Singapore's relatively small physical size, the country has the world's ninth largest foreign reserves. The Singapore Armed Forces are the most technologically advanced and well-equipped in the region.
