Desktop Memory DDR2 RAM - PC2 4200 or PC2 5300 - What are the best deals and makes to look out for please?

    Hi there

I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my desktop (HP Pavillion, T3729.uk). I'm not that clued up on PC's, so I'd really appreciate some help. From what I've been reading, it seems that 2 x 1Gb DDR2 PC2-4200/PC2-5300/PC2-6400 RAM DIMM cards are better than a one 2Gb card. Is this correct? And importantly, is there a particular make that I should look out for? And where are the best deals?

The prices on Amazon don't seem too bad, but perhaps someone knows of a better deal?

    Many thanks

    Sally

i was under the impression also 2 x 1gb is a little faster, due to runing it in dual channel mode

i would recommend these, they are very good ebuyer.com/pro…710

Thank you Aug - these look good, although I'm not sure what you meant in your last para re slightly faster cl4 timing......is this exactly the same product just from a different supplier?

The lower the numbers, the faster the memory (in theory). Real life performance gain is minimal at best, not noticeable in most cases.

Personally I would get the ]Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory Kit for £22.90 + delivery. Buy it at the same time as the new hard drive and eBuyer will give you free Super Saver delivery. The ]1TB Samsung SpinPoint is very nice, also the ]1TB Hitachi Deskstar is slightly better value (if you don't mind spending the £10 more go for the Samsung).

In order to let the new ram modules run at the best speed possible you may have to remove the old PC2-4200 module.
