    Diamond earrings repair

Has anyone had diamond jewellery repaired before? When you get jewellery repaired, they often send it away and you come back another day to collect the jewellery. Problem with this is that the stone may be replaced if it is an expensive stone?

I have a pair of diamond earrings which have expensive stones in them so I don't want to lose sight of them. I do not want them to be sent away for repairs. Even if I manage to find a workshop that will do it while I wait, they will not let me go into the workshop while they do the repair and if I ask to do so, it would show that I mistrust them, which may cause offence.

I will post an image of what the earrings look like in the first post. One of the small diamonds on the outer ring has fallen off on each earring so I need this replaced. They aren't expensive but the main stone setting is.

Anyone got any ideas as I am in a bit of dilemma. Is it possible for me to buy the small diamonds and do the repair myself? Or just do a botched job so that the missing tiny stone doesn't look so obviously missing?

My local jeweller has a hatch between the workshop and the waiting room. You can watch him work. Such a thing does exist. Pity is it is in Bradford so no good for you. Wouldn't try a diy job. You could do more harm than good

Depends where you are. in Birmingham we have Hockley jewelry quarter where there are lots of repaired most will repair while you wait.

but will they let you watch them repair the jewellery? will they will allow you into their workshop?

After the last repair I had done. I would not let anything out my site again. As they made a platinum ring smaller. Wasn't for a while. I realised the c*** had removed the hall mark park. So have a very expensive ring with no hall mark. The ring is from the 1920s as well. As it was my grandmothers and was going to be my engagement ring. My dad gave it to my oh and me. So make sure you check it after. I never thought a well known chain would do this.

i guess you are right. i may end up dislodging more of the stones then that would be a blooming disaster. i could just be bold and ask if the repair shop will allow me in to watch the repair and face their looks.

you should be fine as there are machines which can tell what type of precious metal jewellery is made of. i saw a jeweller used it some years ago. it can also tell what precious stone and also the 'k' rating in gold.

I would imagine they don't let you in because they have to be careful for light fingered members of the public. You can see their point. If you've got expensive pieces of jewellery knocking about you don't want any old Tom dick and harry wandering around

makes sense. they worry as it is just letting you into their shop so definately no no to walk into the workshop. they could end up being robbed.

i wonder if this is available any where in hatton garden in london. i could go and have a look. if i am ever in birmingham i could go there. are there signs outside the shops to state repairs while you wait?

why don't you phone a few jewellers up and ask them over the phone. just say you're uncomfortable letting the diamonds out of sight. I'm sure you're not the first person to be worried about it. this way you don't have to face any uncomfortable looks either.
