do you really believe that?

Both me and my mum have to so i might tell her about it.

Nobody gets an allowance for washing their clothes. A uniform is no different to anybody else who works. You do get an allowance for uniform upkeep if you have to buy it yourself, but not if it is provided.

Not for washing your clothes you can't, otherwise everybody could claim. Someone who works in a bank or blue collar job wears normal clothes has just as much right to claim as someone in uniform. The idea is ridiculous.

Maybe ridiculous but its true, ring the IR up and ask them, its in my tax code now.

you cannot claim a rebate. You can claim for a tax code adjustment. Not at all the same as a rebate.

Sorry but you are wrong. Certain professions can (nurse, doctor etc). however, it is a very small amount totalling about £12 per year.

i am self employed and claim all my laundry costs back at the end of the year for washing overalls etc always had a rebate....its included in the total so it aint broke down so i doubt its very much

That reminds me a I need to do this. If im not paying tax, do i still get money?

just because one person doesn't know that you can get a rebate on it doen't mean you can't
if some people have been successful that surely suggests the person that dealt with your enquiry wa wrong, or on the other hand the people who received their money had been dealt with by people that think otherwise.

Sorry but you are wrong. The rebate is uniform allowance, only payable if you buy your own uniform. Doctors and nurses gear can be washed for free using the hospital laundry so no rebate there either. You get nothing for washing your clothes.

Tax Code XXXX

I am writing in order to have my tax code amended to take into account my expenditure on washing the Company Uniform with logo’s worn in my current post as a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

I would like to claim retrospectively for the maximum period, which I believe to be 6 years, and have enclosed the latest copy of my P60.

Yours

lol i actually aint got a clue what you are arguing with me over, basically what they told me is my tax code is ALREADY adjusted to take care of this, maybe i did it years ago, maybe my employer sorted it a long time ago i forget, but i get this deduction already.

In simple terms, you can't claim for washing clothes you use in your job. It's not quite as straightforward as that but the rule applies to the vast majority of people.

There are, however, certain employments that qualify for what is known as a Flat Rate Expense.

These involve workers who have successfully argued (normally through agreement with HMRC and their unions) that they have costs that are wholly, necessarily and exclusively incurred in performing their duties.

There is a fixed amount claimable and this is (usually) automatically included in peoples' code numbers.

A full list is here ;-

hmrc.gov.uk/man…htm

If you don't fall in this list, you (generally) qualify for nowt.

Self Employed people are different as they only have to satisfy the 'wholly and necessary' (not the 'exclusive') test and so they are able to claim more generous expenses through their accounts.

arguing?! What on earth. You're either incredibly sensitive or dumb. I was trying to point out that you could have been dealt with by someone that doesn't know!!! Jeez man.

havent got a clue havent opened a wage slip for years

My tax rebate forms arrived last week but there's so much to fill out I dunno if I'll ever bother to fill them all out as we're only talking about £12 a year.

I dont work...but my OH wrote a letter in May and it took 5 weeks to get a reply, they asked if his employer provided a laundry service. He replied back at the end of June saying they dont and we are still awaiting a reply.............

The IR and NI offices are a complete joke. I have been after a NI refund for 6 months now. 6 letters with silly or no response and telephones are out of order (i.e 10-20 min queues then cut off).

If only it was the same when you owed them money!

The civil service in this country is run by a bunch of muppets (i.e Labour!).

i had a letter saying there is a delay
been about 5 weeks now

You wont get this, I tried getting this over 5 years ago and found out it's a load of **** eventually you will receive a letter back saying you cannot claim for laundry allowances unless you purchased your own uniform and your emplyer does not have a laundry service - even then it's doubtfull that you will get it as they could ask for receipts.

had my tax code changed today for the rebate, i sent the template letter off the other thread no forms to fill in
they didnt ask for proof ,took two weeks from when i sent the letter.

i have been claiming an allowance for years
sure it for work clothes and tool allowance
think its about £60 a year
will have to look for my end of year (P60) to get the code and what its for
we had overalls supplied by the company and cleaned by them too
think is was agreed by the then NGA
then became GPMU and now AMACUS
in the litho print trade by the way

If you work in a uniform and have to wash it yourself then yes u can claim a "uniform tax rebate" only once then HMRC will adjust your tax code for future years.

Has anyone used uniformtaxrebate.co.uk to do this? I'm worried it could be a scam.
