Digital camera - built-in battery or not?

I'm hoping to get a modest digital camera for stepson at Xmas - basic cost around £50 net. He has asked for one with built-in battery rather than separate rechargeables (typically 2x NiMH) but I am sceptical. Surely an internal battery, although convenient to trickle charge, might run-out at a crucial time or become faulty? Also, fewer cameras have these and tend to be more expensive. My inclination is to get one that takes NiMH rechargeables and always have a spare set charged for substitution as neeeded. (The Fujifilm Finepix A850 discussed at hotukdeals.com/ite…p-/ looks suitable.)

Any views please on pros and cons of a built-in battery and choice of camera?

I too have always prefered to buy cameras that take AA or AAA battery's. All mine do .I even have portable chargers , car and solar I can take away on holiday so I 've always got power . I recently had to look for a new camera as a retirement gift and liked the Panasonic , not sure if it was the Lumix range , anyway it had a built in battery and a replacement was £50 .Thats a lot of money for a battery , so I opted for a Nikon .

my finepix s5700 takes both rechargable and none rechargable so i can take extras when out shooting

built in,Lithium ion batteries hold a charge much better than nimh rechargables ,if you charge up nimh and come to use the camera several weeks later the batteries will most likely be dead and need charging,With lithium ion if you charge the camera you could come back in a year and it will still be charged ,Alkaline batteries do not have the power to run a digital, camera and you may only get 10 or 20 shots from a set of batteries

I agree. I have 2 cameras and the one with the internal battery is by far the best. Never lets me down and keeps the charge like, forever. The one with rechargable batteries is a pain. Seems to only take a few photos and then needs batteries charged again. I have 2 sets of rechargable batteries and still cant seem to keep up with it.

Internal, you get can get chargers that work off a car lighter and are very portable. Take my cam on hols and have never had the need to charge in a 2 week period and I take in excess of 200 shots

Having used both AA powered cameras and proprietary based cameras, my choice is very much the latter - I find AA ni-mh batteries can lose their charge quickly and also you don't get an accurate battery meter, usually you'll only get a warning shortly before it dies. Proprietary batteries last far long when not used and often last longer in the camera as well, they also give a much more accurate warning as to when the battery is going to die.

I don't really buy the argument that AA's are more readily available as much of the time I'm well away from any shops and instead ensure I take sufficient li-ion batteries with me which usually is just a couple spare lasting me up to a couple of weeks (1800 shots). I have a Panasonic LX2 that I just keep in a pocket or the car spare in case I need a camera unexpectedly, I honestly can't remember when I last charged it as it months ago but it's still taking shots without issue.

Thanks everyone for that helpful advice. It seems that the Li-ion rechargeable does have advantages and is not too expensive to replace. Stepson still favours this type of camera and the Fuji FinePix J12 seems to fit the bill; £70.28 net at Jessops at present. A bit more expensive than I intended but with other extra features!
