Digital Camera recommendation thread

I was happy with the response to my external hard drive recommendation thread, so let's see how you all do a second time.

After a digital camera this time to replace a Casio Exilim that was bought in 2005 and has just died. Requirements are that it is as high on the megapixels as possible (12 seems to be standard now), or otherwise has a lens that will adequately compensate (I should point out that I know nothing about this sort of thing). At least a 5x Optical Zoom is also a requirement. Price range is up to about £250 for the right model, though preferably around £200. Again, don't mind spending more for a superior product.

I will reiterate that I know very little about digital cameras. I was considering a Panasonic Lumix, but the girlfriend doesn't like the turning switch to change modes on the top (perhaps a little particular, but it is for her).

Let me know what you all think. I am also more than happy for people to put explanations as to why a particular model is better; I am here to learn.

why so many? Even at my extremes I'd defy anyone to see the difference between 10 and's down to skill, knowledge and.... lenses lenses lenses.

Panny. Tz7 or tz10 / thread

TZ7 is incredible. Never used the TZ10 but the TZ7 produces some incredible photos, and videos. Well worth every penny.

I have a Pentax Optio A30 which I've had for a couple of years now and it is wonderful. Very quick and easy to use, the menus are straight forward, and the PQ is also very good for a point and shoot. The only thing I'd want to change about the unit is a wider angled lens, but that would be it.

i'd always recommend the canon ixus range, blimmin esy to use, perfect size, great quality results. priced really decently too.

i found the tz3 (was top dog when i got it) too bulky, and the 10x zoom useless as i wasnt carrying a tripod everywhere with me, so shaky pics if too much zoom. also- the dial on top kept on 'turning' itself when in my bag etc.

can you tell that im soo not a fan of the panny cameras?! lol
