It is no surprise that many are hoodwinked by this kind of marketing hook, line and sinker as many of us are uninformed as to the potential consequences of taking pictures at such high resolutions but led to believe the hype with the number of megapixels being a standout feature in a specifications list (as is the case with CPU clock speed, dynamic contrast of LCD TVs, monitor pixel response times, etc). The way the manufacturers advertise and the fact that not all of us are blessed with constant exposure to the technology industry, it is pretty easy for one to fall into the trap of blindly following manufacturers' claims that are sometimes even bordering of being fraudulent.

The conseqeuences I've just mentioned are that by using smaller pixels, there is an increase in image noise and less ability to capture detail in low light. Also, higher resolution pictures require more processing power (even more so with noise reduction algorithms) and taking high resolution pictures will be slower than taking lower resolution pictures. The image sizes also increase, quite obviously, for very little or no gain at all. What's more, for a cheap point and shoot camera to suit your budget, setting the camera to a high megapixel count will almost certainly result in an amalgamation of the above disadvantages, exacerbated by a slower processing engine (due to the cheap pricing of the camera).

For the OP, it would be more prudent to choose a camera which succeeds on other factors such as effectiveness of the noise reduction engine, start up times, battery life and so on.
