    digitial camera - recommedation please

Hello. We want a very good (and easy to use) digital camera for general people and scenery photography (the quality of the photos we take of our kids on our current camera are grainy and pretty useless). Can someone suggest a good camera for us to get - it really needs to take sharp and clear photos - the price is not an issue as this will be my birthday present. Thanks.

Well are you after a compact camera or a SLR style camera? Compacts have smaller zooms SLR much bigger. Price are we talking £100, £250, £500 or a £1000? I wouldn't bother with anything under £100.

Have a look at the Fuji Finepix S-range, easy point and shoot cameras with good zooms.
The S5700 will set you back £105 the S6500 £150 and the S9600 £220. These are the pick of the range.

If you want to splash out a little more and want to learn more about photography the have a look at at the Nikon D40 at £300.

Before you buy anything go to a camera shop and hold the camera to see how it feels in your hand. If it doesn't feel right move on because if your not happy holding it you wont end up using.

You can pick up a Fuji s5700 for £105 at the moment. In fact there's a thread on HUKD where you may be able to get it even cheaper amazon.co.uk/gp/…953 and one to the camera alone amazon.co.uk/Fuj…-56

That camera should provide you with some really good photo's.

Have a look at some of the results on this thread OP and see what quality you are after and maybe ask a few questions there as well.

Gavin's right though in that you need to choose between the compact and the SLR style to begin with.

yep as above the fuji range is good i saw a deal for the s5800 around 120-30 i think

    lol crossed posts Gavin

Take a look at the Kodak Z612. Its SLR but still fairly compact. Quality Schneider Kreuznach lense with 12x optical zoom and a nice big 2.5 inch hi res display. Not sure about the current retail price but will be around £100 - £150 (paid £229 a year ago). No complaints about the picture and build quality.

I think compact as this is mainly going to be used for people/kiddy shots and will be carried out with us a lot. Many thanks to all those posting on this thread.

Hi i have a casio of all things its an exilim 5mb and takes pretty good shots its absolutley tiny so fits nicely into a handbag etc for days out, and as for quality it really is very good and has lots of photo settings on it too, i run a nikon d80 slr for full on photography but for day to day memories and bits and pieces for the money it really is a good one the casio.

Canon 860IS, its slighty more than the ones people mentioned above, but its worth every single penny, such an awesome camera.

Before you make a final decision, go into a shop and have a look, hold and a play, its how i fell in love with 860IS, the screen looks brilliant.

If you want something that is easy to use as well as giving decent quality shots, the Panasonic range are well worth a look.

A couple of compacts to look at.............

    ]Panasonic TZ3 £164.49 @ Ebuyer,a review of this came ]http//ww…cfm
This model as a 10x optical zoom so will be good for scenery/wildlife shots also.

    ]Panasonic FX50 £149.99 @ Jessops,a review of this camera ]http//ww…cfm
This one is more compact and stylish, possibly

    Hope this helps:)

    don't buy from jessops.

our camera broke after 6 months, they took it to be reapired- wouldn't give a refund. still not right and now jessops are offering an exchange. we clearly have a right to a refund, they are being SODS!

And if your budget is a bit less than the Panny ones my choice would be the Fuji FinePix A920 which at £74.82 plus a free camera case is a bargain

Go to your local trading standards and ask for help

Jessops seem to differ from store to store, the leicester one most likely would have given a straight refund or at least an exchange (used to work there).

Panasonic FX33 is another one worth looking at, the wide angle lense makes a huge difference. Panasonic's mostly all come with Leica lenses which are of high quality. Dont get sucked into the megapixel battle, you realistically only need 6-7 with a decent lens.

Something with at least x5 optical zoom, ignore any digital zoom figures as D-zoom just blows up the pic and makes it pixelated and about 5 to 6 MPixels you dont need anymore unless you fancy printing out pinsharp A4 prints

The Fuji F20 won loads of awards last year and can now be found for around £60 if you google around.
