Ive played a few games on the ps3 now which have been reviewed as having excellent graphics (call duty 4, gt5) and have been dissapointed in the graphics manily with jagged edges.
I have a uk ps3 40gb and a 40" samsung m seires connected with hdmi, i have got the settings for the tv off avforums.
Anything i need to tweak?

how close are you too the TV playboy?

theres a few things, cant remember exactly what now. Make sure you've ticked the 720, 1080i and p boxes in display, then put RGB something (full rgb?) on as well as the whites (if ur tv supports it) erm just explore the options under display.

Oh, and sit further back.

My teenage son usese his PS3 connected to our 32" HD TV with a HDMI cable and the graphics are STAGGERING.

So it is possible to get good graphics so must be in your setup somewhere.

lolz i swear cod4 on ps3 only displays at 720p
xbox360 ftw!

Maybe your expectations are too high, did you expect photo realistic graphics?

COD 4 runs at 600p on both 360 and PS3.

Like halo 3 runs at 640p
and Haze runs at 576p

on a 1080p tv? im confused

have you set the ps3 to play on HD?

Original Poster

I sit about 2 metres away, quite close, but i think the graphics could be better.

For some images it looks great but it seems the edges are over jaggedy. Compares to ps2 graphics in some cases.

Just changed the cross color/rgb and super-white settings but cant tell much of a difference.
It says it is outputing in 1080p.

Could it be the playstation harddrive? I have had a couple of problems with it so far. Whilst playing sega rally the game slowed down for about 2 minutes so you could still play but was just going slow, and when playing a dvd it just stalled and i had to turn off at the back.

Yes.

the tv is capable of accepting a 1080p feed.

The games however, don't playback at 1080p. Some do, but few.

Very few games on both the PS3 and XBox360 are actually natively rendered at 1080p - most are rendered natively at around 720p and then upscaled to match the TV resolution of 1080p.

Most noticeably the effect you'll see when running at lower resolutions even upscaled is jagged diagonal lines which is known as aliasing, it is quite noticeable on PS3/Xbox 360 games and unfortunately there's not much you can do about it. Some developers enable Anti-aliasing which helps but doesn't seem to be enabled on most games.

This is a screenshot of a game at 720p, you can see the stepped effect around the rear window and the spoiler of the car:

img.photobucket.com/alb…jpg

Same shot at 1920x1200 (just above 1080p) and you can see the details of the car are smoother:

img.photobucket.com/alb…jpg

Now if AA is enabled you can see the car and the scenery is far smoother:

btw what game is that. it doesnt look very good graphically compared to one of my favs forza 2

Edit: i shouldnt have really compared that game to forza 2 as forza is a sim but for e.g. PGR4 looks much better (arcade racer) than that game u link

This should be good

backlight 10
picture mode: cinema
contrast: 90 (was max)
brightness: 51
colour: 52
sharpness: 5
colour temp: neutral
noise reduction off
mpeg noise reduction off
black corrector off
advanced contrast enhancer - off
gamma - low
clear white off
live colour off
colour space standard

Should be looking good with those settings
Theres a thread for it avforums.com/for…075
but dont change the service menu settings as i believe that voids warranty
Just change the normal ones

It's an old game called Trackmania Sunrise - the screenshots are from a guide I wrote a while back which is why they look a bit out of date. It does show the flexibility of a PC though, the next shot is at full resolution with AA and Anisotropic filtering enabled, look at the road marker in particular to see how much the image has been cleaned up. This is something strangely console titles still suffer from despite AF being pretty much free in terms of performance hit:

do pc games not differ to console games in terms of their HD out put, or not
if u have a pc game displaying at 1900x1200 does that mean it is high def because full hd set is 1920x1080

The jagged effect you are referring to is known as aliasing and unfortunately there's not much you can do about it. The Xbox 360 was meant to be able to run 4xAA (anti-aliasing) without any performance hit with the onboard memory on the graphics card but that never seemed to actually happen.

Dandoc2, do you still have the samsung r88 tv? Interested to know how you play your 360. Im using the hdmi settings on avforums at 720p, but people seem to differ about playing through vga and hdmi and which is better etc

regarding the ps3 graphics, have you tried through various settings? - the ones on avforums are continually tweaked by members who post their own

2meters is too close, you need to get away bra.

HD is just a name for two specific 16:9 resolutions, 720p and 1080p which are 1280x720 and 1920x1080 respectively. PC games have been able to run at these resolutions for a long time now, there's no difference between a PC game running at 1920x1080 and a console game running at 1080p (although strictly the console can run with a lower number of horizontal lines). You can run a PC through a 1080p TV and play games at that resolution.

plus im happy with the way games look at the moment. Gears of war, COD4 etc look great but just wanted to know if people were using different settings out of curiosity as some people always go on about 1:1 mapping

Those settings look good with anything i connect up so they should improve your viewing i gave me friend the settings and he said its like its a different tv as he had the backlight on 5/10 which was dark like hell

GET an HDMI cable if your TV has the socket for it, i thought the graphics were poor until i used the HDMI cable. Now its great
