DIY Advice Please - Hand Rails

Can anyone advise me on do's and don'ts for new hand rails please? Our house has quite an old rectangular version (there is probably a far better word for it!) and I want to change it before we get the hall/stairs/landing decorated.

I see they have some round hand rails on the Wickes website along with brackets - is there anything I should avoid or any advice anyone has please?

Varnish/paint the rail before you put it up. Use long screws and good quality plugs (Fischer SX are good).

You can get some nice stainless steel ones for a modern look, they arent that much more expensive than a decent wooden one either, with the bonus of being tougher to knocks, no risk of splinters and you never need to stain/varnish/paint them, and they wipe clean dead easily, have a gander on ebay for made to measure ones for perfect fit, make sure you allow a slight over hang at each end especially if you have little kids.

    +1

They are difficult to paint or varnish, so if you can, figure out where the screws are going to go for the fixing to the wall, then put a hook in either end of the rail (screw holes) and hang with string. This way you'll be able to paint all the way around without waiting for the top / bottom to dry.
Another method, probably easier, is to only paint the area that is going next to the wall, let it dry, fix it to the wall and paint the rest.

I varnished mine in situ, i didn't find it too awkward:thumbsup:

Thanks for the info. Not sure about the metal ones, can you imagine the sticky finger prints all over it!

don't use a water based finish , lifts the grain too much and
leave the rail on the stairs for a few days before ya fix it

Do you think it's better to get a smaller diameter round handle (in order to be able to grip better)?
