Do i have a leg to stand on in my situation?

At university, I took out two books of the same title, just different editions. They were the last ones in the library, so it would be impossible for me to have taken a third copy out.

I've had the books out 7 days I've had to renew them every day. After returning the two books it still says I have another copy out of the same title, so they've issued me 2 copies of the latest edition, but i never realised.

So, I have proof i returned my books but it says I still have another copy out and its not on the library shelves. I swear they've made a mistake and issued it to someone else on my ticket. Am I going to be forced to pay them the price of the book, or do i have any rights?

    in layman's terms?

    Talk to them?
Keep return receipts and go see the librarian tomorrow.

    Borrowed two books.
    Returned two books.
Library says one of the books hasn't been returned.
    What do I do?

Depends on the library, our has a 'claims returned' situation. A staff member will fill out a form saying you claim to have returned it. End of. They'll do a shelf check and realise they've made an error. They probably checked the same book back in TWICE, leaving one outstanding... just explain - you'll be fine.

Basically had two books out, returned them both. Never realised 3 books were issued to my ticket. I've never had the third book and its worth £50. They're going to charge me for losing it, when i never had it in the first place

How do you know it is a third book? Not one of the ones you've returned already. It's really easy for them to take it in but not zap it. Are they RFIDed or just barcoded?

is the 3rd book a different edition?

How many editions did they have in the library.

Poor peers with no books because you wanted (at least) two!

edited the title so it makes better sense

If you have the original ticket get the serial number of the "missing book" go and get it from the shelf and hand it in at the desk.

Its another copy of the latest edition, I have a reciept stating i returned two copies back and thats gone through fine. Its another copy of the latest edition.

I know mine was returned ok because I accidently bashed the binding and cut it. Its sitting on the shelf.

I know its a third book because its got a totally different barcode

there should be a bar code scan or something to differentiate between the missing book and the book you've returned

yup the barcode is different, thats why its not on the shelf, I've checked. But I've never had it out on my ticket and lib cant find the book at a quick glance

Go and talk to them. They will be able to find out how many copies the Library has in total and how many are currently checked out. Then go with them to the shelf and see if the rest are there. If there are, then you are in the clear. If they are not, you may have to wait until they do a stock take. Be polite and explain what has happened - librarians are usually very nice people in my experience...

Any chance someone borrowed your library card, or the person behind you when checking them out accidentally got his checked out on yours? I'd go for the claims returned thing, but if they don't do that there, and you actually get receipts which you're expected to keep then I imagine they will charge you for the book to be replaced. Often it's more than RRP as they have to get it from somewhere specific, but at our library they accept replacements as payment, like if you could buy it cheaper from Waterstones for example.

Not meaning to be rude here, but do you really think anyone on here can help you with this?
Just go to the library tomorrow and talk to them about it, maybe ask if they can do a stock check/shelf check and see if it is about or has been returned by someone else. No other piece of advice will be more helpful than that.

Its definately not there. I'm a librarian back home and I'm really lenient (depending on the person) but here at the library they are very bureaucratic and give no leway as I've seen. If your a minute late returning your book thats a 60p fine

Sickly sweet: true true, I get what you mean. I was wondering abouting laws, like if you break something you only have to pay the wholesale cost. Guessing it doesnt apply here, lol.

    +1

OP.. If you have a contract with them under your account they can charge you what they wont if they think they are correct. You will just have to submit a complaint and escalate it if they dont resolve the matter.

Advise them to freeze all charges until the issue is resolved.

You might find you don't need to take it further, just make sure you speak to the right person and be polite but firm hopefully they will help you. It won't be the first time they will have had issues like this, there will probably be a process to follow and hopefully it will have been returned or be on the shelf and they'll realise they made a mistake.
    Good luck.

You could say "why would anybody want 3 copies of the same book". Come to think of it, why 2!
