Do I need a HD graphics card for my PC to play BlueRay through my TV?

Question for those in the know.

I'm thinking about buying a BlueRay player/burner for my PC. The PC is currently hooked up to my TV using the VGA connection.

What do I need to get the best out of playing BlueRay through it? Or should I just buy a PS3? lol

Cheers for the help!

TV is a Toshiba Regza 1080p jobby if that makes any difference.

Personally I'd buy a PS3 for overall support.

But it depends on your specification.

I would buy a PS3:thumbsup:

I would also buy a PS3, or even a stand alone blue ray player.....

my Sony playes blue ray and had HDMI out, but my Sony KDL40W4000 only recognises it as 720p input..... so its pretty pants (although saying that I do havea stand alone player so never use it for that anyway)

Is it gonna be cheaper though? I already have a 360 for games, but if I'd have to spend £200 quid to get the PC to play BlueRay I may as well just get a PS3. Or a bog standard standalone player.

I've heard the standalone players vary, from really slow to good.

I have a PS3, and I have had it fixed once for a laser.

But the playback is brilliant. Plus you have the option of another platform for your games with just as many outputs.

Its the cheaper and better option currently.

PS3's are £200 in argos (were).

PS3 it seems to be then. How much are second hand ones going for these days?

You can buy a Blu Ray player for your PC for some £40. You don't need a "HD" video card (that's just marketing nonsence - even the lowliest PCs have been capable of putting out resolutions far in excess of HD for over a decade now), but you do need a pretty meaty CPU. A Pentium4 won't be able to hack it, but more or less any Core2Duo should be up to the task.

I have a bluray player on my pc with a decent graphics card hooked up to the living room lcd. Don't have a blu-ray disc to test what it looks like though - lol, I should get one just to know the answer!

I've got an AMD Phenom x4, so that should cover it then? And it would be okay through the VGA connection?

QoS if a very dark film well deffo was in DVD format.

I'd go with something like the Dark Knight its the only really true HD film so far. Brilliant quality.

Though I will be buying QoS this week so will tell you.

There are plenty of GPX on the market that support HD output but it's more to do with your PC, you need a fairly huge processor to output Full 1080 on the fly, are you hooked up directly???

If so I would get a card that is capable of decoding 1080 by itself without the need for your PC memory with dx10 support plenty for sub £100 if you look around

Might also be useful to get one with HDMI native port as well although it won't carry sound so a S/PDIF or 7.1 card would be needed.

I would suggest looking into a popcorn hour or something if you want full MKV support at 1080, you can use them as a NAS, no need to have PC on and will output all your HD needs, whilst PS3/360 are great they are both very limited on their output file formats.

Just get a Blu ray drive for your PC, that CPU can handle it easily!

Think I might just do that.

I'd hate to buy one and then need a graphics card on top though.

We'll have to see if the Phenom x4 and 4gb of RAM can handle it!!
