do I stand a chance of flight compensation?

Was flying from Manchester to Amsterdam this week and as we approaching Amsterdam we was told it was to foggy to land and we would be circling for 40 mins to see if it cleared and if not would probably end up being diverted to Düsseldorf. The air stewardess told us that there was no fog at Rotterdam and we could have diverted to there (30 mins away by coach) but 'the company' didn't want us to do that. After circling for 40 mins it was still foggy and there was also now fog at Rotterdam so we was now being diverted to Düsseldorf. I understand the fog situation was out the airlines hands but I feel the decision making was poor from their point. I.e the time we spent circling we could have landed at Rotterdam and already be on a coach to Amsterdam. They new there would be fog at Rotterdam after the 40 mins so why risk having to divert all the way to Düsseldorf? Also I'm assuming the only reason we went to Düsseldorf not a closer airport is because the airline fly in and out of there so that was the cheaper option for them not the quicker option. Also, there was still plenty of flights landing at Amsterdam at the time we were due to land. Would does everyone think?? Thanks

Also I took this screenshot and as you can see we was actually the only plane around that time that didn't land at Amsterdam ( the 3 flight numbers all from manchester are obviously just 1 flight all be carried out by Flybe)

I do not know if your situ warrants compensation but I can advise that getting compensation from an airline is akin to getting blood from a stone.

I went to Colorado via Chicago and on the return trip at Chicago everything and everyone was on the plane and just as we thought we were about the leave the Pilot decided his hours would over run if we departed and the flight was cancelled. This lead to an overnight stay in a very fancy 5* French hotel for free but a bill for nearly $100 for a little food and 3 phone calls.

I tried for over 12 months to get my $100 and to claim for a days lost wages, in the end it boiled down to them demanding original receipts and then claiming they never arrived and then refusing to accept copies and they never acknowledged the loss of a days pay. To be honest trying to claim my money ended up costing me about a further £30.

I would just let it go. What you would get is minimal and they may have messed about but its better than landing in the fog and crashing. I get your frustration though. Maybe try just one letter to them but I wouldn't do any more than that.

Number of factors that might result in others being able to land and your aircraft being diverted. Different types of aircraft have different equipment allowing them to land in zero visibility. Air traffic control can put in limits as to how many aircraft they can accept in poor weather. Companies prefer certain alternative airports due to ground handling problems, baggage handling, refuelling. There's many factors so don't think just because the aircraft in front of you or behind you can land that you can also. By the sounds of it the company didn't want to accept Rotterdam in the hope they could get you into Amsterdam once the fog cleared. They can only hold for so long and by then Rotterdam was closed resulting in diversion to Dusseldorf.

you dont say how much the delay is, but its weather so i dont think you have a leg to stand on anyway

Nope. If it's weather you don't get comp.

Delay was about 7 hours to our final destination. It's 4 hours+ for compensation in normal circumstances and I'm pretty confident they could have got us to our final destination within that 4 hours if they had made better different decisions

Compensation (if you are thinking of EU261) is payable from 3 hours, not 4+.

Op, as your delay seems to be weather related, you won't be able to claim.

Captain and flight crew of the aircraft, along with air traffic control will have assessed the information and decided what the safest alternative was. Of course, maybe you, sat in 26B might think their decisions are the wrong ones, but I'd personally go with what they decide is best.

You say that Rotterdam was your preferred alternative but what about the aircraft and crew? Is there an arrangement for that particular company/aircraft to be serviced/checked/refuelled if required at Rotterdam? Is the flight crew and cabin crew due to be relieved and if so, is there a relief crew available at Rotterdam? Is there sufficient staff available at Rotterdam at that particular time to deal with another diverted aircraft? There were probably others that have already diverted there. Like I said before, many factors that Joe Public in 26B doesn't think about.

My guess is it was cheaper to land the plane in Düsseldorf who knows ?. And forget the compo you got no chance with airlines.

I would be surprised if you could claim compensation but i would like to be pleasantly surprised.

Actually the way it came across was that Rotterdam was the preferred destination for the crew also as they repeatedly told us Rotterdam is available but 'the company' want us to circle for 40 mins knowing it would be foggy in Rotterdam also by the time the 40 mins elapsed, hence the reason the pilot announced we would probably end up at Düsseldorf during the first announcement. Yes Flybe do have arrangements at Rotterdam airport. It just seemed to me like the pilot and crew knew Rotterdam was the best option but they were being told they couldn't divert there because The company wouldn't let them.

I have claimed compensation in the past but that was because the aircraft was faulty and changed to a smaller one and we couldn't fit on it!

Sounds like you're just looking for a reason to complain/claim. You've evidently done it before ^
