Do train services totally cut off on New Years Day?

So I phone Traveline a few hours back to enquire about Cardiff > Newport trains on New Years Day - the woman quickly says "there are no trains". But then upon checking train timetables, they are running?
The First Great Western site even says this:

A revised level of service will operate on many route between Christmas and New Year, particularly on Monday 28, Tuesday, 29, Wednesday 30, Thursday 31 December 2009 and Friday 1 January 2010.

Some early morning trains throughout the network will be cancelled and in addition:

    * Line improvement works between Bristol and Newport will result in trains being diverted, retimed or provided by rail replacement coaches. Journey times will be extended as a result of these works.

Errr? I'm half tempted to stay in now!

There's engineering work between Bristol Parkway & Newport. Services are running from Newport heading west to Cardiff etc. National Rail is showing a frequent service throughout the day between the two in both directions.

Im a FGW traindriver and yes the trains are running

Straight from the horse's mouth. Plan your journey but take into account the engineering works.
