...to be given as xmas presents?? My mate has done all her kids xmas shopping on Ebay....all used, not one is new! They both work, money ain't that much of a problem (they can still buy booze!!)
I personally wouldn't like it.
What you think?

seems tight really

better to buy cheap and new I reckon

Thats a good question!

Personally I buy new for everyone - but I dont think I would be offended if I got something mega expensive that my friend had bought second hand like a designer watch

i'd only but second hand for myself and new for others.

I've seen peeps on the FS forum ask about condition of used items as it's for a pressie.:w00t:

TBH i'd rather have nothing than receive a 2nd hand pressie,i'd never give one to adults or kids either.

with this site i often see ebay used items cheaper new espically dvds and games i would not buy somebody something used

I have bought 2nd hand consoles for mine before, the oldest knows that sometimes thats the only way you will get certain things, if I had the money might think differently though

i had a pair of jeans and a top for the youngest, they where from next and immaculate, but wouldnt buy gifts second hand

I wouldn't either......although.................I did buy my son a preowned PSP for his birthday in September, 1st time ever buying a second hand present but he's just 6 and has a DS, Wii, old Playstaion and didn't think he'd use it.
Mind u, if money was tight, I'd rather they had that than nothing!!

Bought some Georgian silver as a pressie for someone last year.
It was second hand.
They loved it.
Depends what it is.

Second hand Georgian silver OK
Second hand knickers not OK :whistling:

no that is abit tight although my sister inlaw has bought her baby sons presents off the second hand market but she is on her own and currently only has £20 per week for food.

OP, your m8's washing line by any chance?

:w00t::w00t::w00t::oops:

I would imagine most people could cut down on something or give it up in order to buy new.

i buy lots of second hand stuff for all us, but i would never give something second hand as a gift except computer games as mother and father in law like a lot of old pc games and i brought them loads for little tree gifts last xmas they was over the moon with them

but never buy 2nd hand clothes as gifts

Out of curiosity, how old are the kids?

Just bought my son 2nd hand effects pedal. Would have cost £300 new and can't afford that this year. He is quite happy with it as he's got what he wants. Also bought 2nd hand computer games to add to new Xbox package for other son. It means he gets more games as I can buy 3 second hand games for the price of one new one. Also bought collector's items second hand but in general I buy new for others.

Back in a bit, off to fs for a spot of crimbo shopping

I buy second hand toys all the time for my own kids, also get them new stuff, but for expensive items I'd rather someone else paid up front and then I buy from them 6months later for half the price when they've had enough of it

wouldn't buy 2nd hand for anyone else though ;-)

I thought it was the thought that counted.......

1yr, 5yr and 10yr. Everything is used, clothes, toddler toys, the lot.

Only if it's a car.

Lol! I ain't a snob if thats who your referring too.....i manage my money accordingly so i don't have to buy used gifts.

I just piced my brother a bike up off ebay. £400 new, but 6 months old in immaculate condition was £140. If it's in excellent condition, or for smaller things, still has a box, then why not?

When i was little, i got a second hand Mater System 2, and later a Super Nintendo, off my Nan. She'd never have been able to afford them brand new, and it was better than getting something that was new and in budget, but what i'd never use.

Original Poster

I ain't really referring to higher priced items.....more toy cars, rattles soft toys etc which by the time you pay postage, will probably be the same price as Tescos!

For gifts - no.

Known fact I'll buy my lil girl 2nd hand clothes but thats all.

The younger ones i'd of thought you'd get away with it,but not the 10 yr old, wouldn't they wonder why things aren't in new packaging etc:w00t:

But isn't paying twice as much (or more) for the privilege of getting some cardboard that will just get binned, somewhat retarded? Also consider the recycling aspect. Buying second hand is saving the planets resources...

I feel sick after that last bit

In the example in the OP,being able to spend money on alcohol but then buying 2nd hand items for Xmas pressies sums it up really,i don't think it's right:roll:

ive bought a few wii games 2nd hand for my son for xmas, cant see the problem with that but toys, games and clothes i'd never do 2nd hand.

i think its a good idea providing they are in good condition. If they children are young they wont care and if they are older they are learning quite a valuable lesson. My boys are now 13 and 10 and we have got quite a few things off ebay. they are learning to check for prices and then weighing up whats good value. They also learn how their money goes further.
I guess its the motives of the parents for doing it. When i used to buy everything new until a few years ago i was ashamed at times of how much i spent on them. If we are all honest i think most people would agree the kids should get far less than they do but we all go overboard as usual at christmas. i am no exception. Both mine want ipod touches this year so for once they have been warned there will be very little extras.
Please dont feel bad towards your friends as i suspect in a few years time you will probably think what a good idea she had. it doesnt mean she loves her kids any less.

Second hand toys games films etc... why not? Especially for own use.

Clothes? eeek no!

wonder-baby;6918762

i'd only buy second hand for myself and new for others.
