Yes but the state of the art sorting offices have state of the art machinery, which will replace the jobs of thousands of postal workers.

if you don't like it leave and let someone else do your job.

True enough, but it's still sad to see people lose jobs.

but isnt this whats happening everywhere????? Get machinery to do the jobs of people to cut down on costs???? Look at all the general 'factory workers' that have lost their jobs because mahines can do their jobs cheaper and more accurately.....I like the royal mail...and do think it should stay but them striking is just making people realise that we can survive without them with complete ease.....all I ever really get through the post is letters from a few companies (banks etc) friends txt or ring me and all other companies email me....so all it would take is for the companies to go via a different postal service and EVERYONE in RM will lose their jobs....is that what they want???:?

If there was an alternative service to the Royal Mail maybe they would have to pull their socks up, a little competition would improve service no end. As a receptionist that deals with post every day i see loads of missorts and cases of missing post. At home i'm the same as you, i get mostly post from the bank and junk mail, as you say the majority of stuff is done online these days.

you will get your post today if your office is a combined mail center and delivery office because they went on strike yesterday at the same time so they didn't have to cross each others picket lines today, because it is mail center strikes yesterday and delivery office strikes today..

If people took the time to find out what is really happening they would be shocked..

it must of been a scab

Live in Leeds to an had our collection yesterday - thats 2 collections in 8 weeks

mine delivered as normal, no strinking posties over here

I have had post today aswell, just now though, always late they am. personally though i think they are wrong to strike. I have to work everyday and get paid rubbish wages but i cant exactly go on strike when it pleases you. loads of people are jobless and would happily work... exactly what theyre doing, employing temps. why wouldnt they?

so.. they should just be grateful for what theyve got?.. even if its grossly unacceptable?.. thats wrong. Everyone should be allowed to complain, its freedom of speech. It sounds like theyre horribly underpaid and overworked.
You can go on strike if you want, but as an individual you would have no leverage whatsoever. If i was unhappy and i had thousands of people in the same boat - obviously there is a problem there.
These workers havent just gone on strike because they fancy it. Theyre striking because Royal Mail wont talk to the union and compromise with their demands. Its fair enough, i hope they get what they want.

Had 2 deliveries this morning, normal post and a special delivery item via the van:)

I'd imagine that they get paid a fair wage for the work that they do, what is classed as grossly unacceptable?
The royal mail always hire temps to cover for the xmas rush so why wouldnt it make sense to employ a few more temps now on the approach to christmas to deal with inevitable backlog that will happen due to the strike. if they werent to i imagine that the backlog of post at christmas would be horrendous and none of us would get mail.

i think royal mail have been getting loads better over the last year most of my stuff sent first class gets there next day and it travels hundreds of miles and over last couple of days still getting delivered so no strike reallly but when they strike next week for the 3 days i think were gonna see big delays

you would think that the postman would just be grateful that they have jobs at this moment in time well apart from the ones that are losing their jobs but to be fair people lose their jobs all the time

mail staff strike = pay rise
pay rise = prices go up
prices go up = companies put their prices up to accomodate the delivery price rise
companies put their prices up to accomodate the delivery price rise = the original postal workers pay rise means nothing and normal people lose out

thats my view and to be fair if the postal staff actually give a scooby doo about the parcels they deliver instead of breaking everything they touch normal people might feel sorry for them and agree with the strikes

THEIR NOT OVERWORKED THE STROLL ALONG LIKE A SNAIL DELIVERING MAIL AND ARE MOANING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP OUT IN OTHER AREAS WHEN THEIR ROUND IS FINISHED INSTEAD OF GOING HOME, THEY GET PAID FOR THE DAY THEY SHOULD WORK THE DAY

I completely agree with you mate, i see my postman wondering around the streets with a fag, ive even caught one in the pub at around 12:30 with his bag of letters (i was on my 30 min lunch break)

The only reason i think they are going on strike is as the prev post said, for a pay rise.

Possibly but i dont think so, he seemed to be set for an afternoon in the pub when i left... either that or he was going back to work drunk

10+ hour days, threats on their job / wages unless they do better / constant demands to work longer and post to larger areas for no extra money.. i think thats unfair. Constant pressures like that are what cause people to snap. I would never accept extra work load / hours in my position without sitting down with my manager and discussing it. Why should i just accept it?
I think then you have a company that almost monopolises a sector - strikes are inevitable. If striking causes problems to the company you are working for - of course you would do it, to get your point across.

im under constant pressure to get backlogs out, i regularly work 10 hour days just to cope with my work load, i get extra work loads when the business requirements mean this. i work for a public sector company so im under constant pressure to do the best i can for the customer. if i dont i would be disciplined as for not doing my job properly. nobody ever just accepts things but they take responsibility for things when they know its got to be done.
