Maybe because they are bored and want to put in a bid whilst at the computer, or because they have a budget and put the limit in to see what happens, not everyone can sit at the computer when an item is ending or likes/trusts/knows about sniping sites.
If something is expected to go for £1,000 I might put in a bid for £500 the day before just to see what happens, have a look at where the other bidders limits end and which are real and which are the automatic bids. Loads of reasons for people doing it, doesn't make them stupid.

    I don't see anything wrong.
It just shows that they put a maximum bid in, so they would only pay the highest that they want to pay.

Whenever I see it I just think shill bidders, I look at their bidding history and it's usually 50%, 75% with that seller. They should show 12months of bidding history not just 30 days though.

If it's not shill bidders then they are bloody idiots.

Looks normal to me (as long as the item is worth that).
m***r was the first to bid earlier this afternoon and placed his maximum bid at £461.01.
As other have placed their bids he has beaten them by £10 but we can't see this.
Only when j***i came along and placed his maximum bid was m***r beaten.
Of course we don't know what j***i is willing to pay but we do know it was at least £10 more.
If he were bidding in the last few seconds with a bid of say £5 more he would have lost out as you have to bid at least the bid increment more than the currently winning bidder. In this case £10 more. The winning bid is not necessarily the highest!

i never get why people bid so early. The thing what gets me is when people are bidding on a item when if they searched buy it now they could of got it cheaper. say a xbox game for £35 when if they had searched buy it now they could of got it from another seller for £30

    Shill Bidders or Dad's :-D

Seriously, I've seen my Dad do this numerous times, gets his bid in early rather than waiting till the last moment. I just shake my head and walk away.

It is strange as up till the last 5 years or so it was always bid early as sniping tools werent that common then.

My dad got annoyed recently as he rarely buys and put in a bid for an item then 5 seconds before end he was outbid obv by a sniping tool.

I see somewhat mixed views as like people say the later the bid the cheaper the item but it devalues things often which is why so often people who start their auction at 99p for a say £40 item get 99p and if they actually listed close to what its worth people wouldnt bid as they think its overpriced and/or they see other sellers with lower starting bids.

Over the years I have seen items I wanted that have had zero or little interest so I place a bid thnking it will end low to be outbid seconds before the end with someone jumping up the price a lot.

I dont think sniping is the same thing as bidding if its automatic.

The thing that I find more stupid is for example a blu ray that has about 10 buy it nows between £10-£15 then 1 or 2 at like £24.99 makes me lol as to how they think it will sell

I use snipers all the time, bagged myself a pspgo for £87 earlier in the year!
