doctors/hospital basic question

Hi all, don't get sick too often so don't really know anything about doctors and what not, however I've got an ear infection that I had about 2 years ago, had it all last week and was hoping it would just clear up. However after popping around to my local GP this morning all i was greeted with was a locked door.
Anyway, my question is am I allowed to just go along to the clinic of my local hospital, as I literally can't hear anything out of either ear atm. I rang my folks, but they seem to think that you need to get referred to the hospital by your GP first.
Rep for helpsies!

head to A&E at the hospital then, or if they have a minor incidents clinic even better. But these seem thin on the grounds these days.

Do you have a walk in NHS centre nearby, or do Boots still have them?

You can't go to a hospital clinic unless you have been referred by a GP, your folks are right I'm afraid.
If your GP is closed try your local NHS walk in centre, they can be very helpful and are open all day/evening. That's probably your best move I reckon.
Hope you get better soon!
I wouldn't bother with A&E if you can avoid it. If you've got an ear infection you will be triaged right to the back of the queue I would imagine, and you will most likely have to wait for 4 hours to see anyone.

no you do need to get referred athen wait for ages for an apointment.. you could go to A&E

If you ring your doctors there should be a telephone number for an out of hours surgery which you can visit. Failing that try the NHS direct website. Hope you are better soon.

We have a local minor injuries unit, and when our doctors is closed this is where I go. If you ring out of hours then they normally tell you to go here so guessing its same with yours

Good luck, hopefully it will get better quick

I'm sorry I don't really know the answer, I would say probably you could do that but I just wanted to ask if you can't hear anything out of either ear how did you hear what your parents said at the other end of the phone?

I'd find out why your doctors is shut, it maybe open later, in which case problem solved

Don't think I'd clog up A&E with an ear infection.

I'd be pretty miffed if A&E was filled with them if I had to go with something.

Accidents and emergency was the term I couldn't remember, well done!

If i walk into a&e will they actually see me without first having seen a GP, or will they be too busy fixing broken legs and stuff to even care?

They won't see you if there are people with more pressing problems who have come in before or come in after you, and to be honest there will be. You will probably have the maximum wait. A&E isn't really the place for ear infections.Try your local walk in centre, or in the past I have called another GP saying mine is closed, and have managed to get an emergency appointment.

they will look at you but you will be the lowest priority so could be waiting anything up to 8 hours. Then the dr will probably give you a 1 minute inspection and tell you to make an appoitment with your GP :w00t:

Yes you can, Go to the A&E or ask some one to call NHS direct and get some advice (08454647) It sounds like you have otitis. If you are having a discharge and if your ear popped it may be otitis media. You will need some antibiotics to clear it up.

As above. Personally I dont ever go to A&E its a joke normally. So i generally goto GP then get an appointment if i need to see a specialist at the hospital.

However, obviously not an option for you. Ring NHS Direct 0845 4647 and they will advise you on where and what to do.
