Does anybody know how online payments work?

For example, I shop at sainsburys, they have my card details stored but they only charge me once my "personal shopper" (la de da!) has done my shop, so does that mean that somebody manually enters my card details like they would do if you were paying over the phone?
The reason I ask is that I had a small amount of money (£30) pinched from my account via my debit card which never leaves the house as I only shop online with it and I was wondering if it could have been done by somebody dodgy at one of the places I've ordered from nicking my details. I would rather this than someone creepily spying on me via my computer - that really freaks me out.
I run Eset Nod 32 antivirus/spyware but who knows how good that or any other software really is?
I filled out a fraud claim form at Halifax today and the guy said because it was a small amount of money they probably wouldn't do a major investigation so I will probably never find out how it was done

£30 they won't be bothered about,my partner's card got done for close to £1K and they weren't interested. He did get it back, took a few weeks to sort out.He card been done in a shop, this debit card he had never been used online.

If you not used the card in a shop and have stored your card details,it's likely it's somebody at one these places I would thought rather than spyed online.Thats my opinion anyway.

tesco sainsburys etc keep details on your card etc so they can process the data, then when your items are being loaded into a van the member of staff tells the computer to put the payment through.,,,, the staff DO NOT see your details as its held on a secure server by head office....

this will work for most companies..... im guessing you either used it on a dodgy site that looked like a real one .... halifax should be able to tell you where the payment request went too .e.g. when i noticed £60 missing from my account, i got the name of the company for research them.....

Have you ever used the card in ATM, cos it may of been cloned with someone putting device on the ATM.

someone has got hold of your details from somewhere and bought something from 02 ?

make sure its the real website & always look for the "padlock" in your browser ....

In FF its in the bottom right hand corner .... In IE its next to the address bar

this should show when logging into certain websites & when ever filling out payment details
