Does anyone know what mobile text message reports actually do?

I used to think it meant that the other person has received it and read the message but my friend seems to think it just means it's been sent but it doesn't even mean that the other person has received it but it's on the way as soon as the person has reception.

What is the case with it exactly?

    Thanks in advance.

I thought it was when the other person receives the text as well. But be careful with them as some networks charge you to receive the reports.

On 02 (and maybe others) if you precede your message with *#0# you get a notification when its delivered. Not sure about auto notifications that you set via your phone though.

Yep, It's when the person has received the message, They don't have to have opened and read the message on their phone.

I thought Delivery Report means just that... the message has been delivered.
Read report is where the receiver has actually read it.

The text you send has an extra flag set, when the text hits the other persons phone and get accepted it creates a return message back to the number it was sent from. That massage passes back through the network(s) to your phone.
    Simple at that ! :-)

I dunno if it actually is the case though, as one of my friends sent me texts a couple days ago while I was in an area with low reception and some texts came through at random times answering different texts, which didn't make sense at the time.

My friend then told me he had received delivered reports but I hadn't received those until I went upstairs and received a couple messages simultaneously and one of them was a response to a text several messages ago.

I showed this to the friend I was with and he seems to think this justifies what he said before that the delivery report just means the network from the other end has done there job by sending the text and you just have to wait for the recipients network to do the rest.

Can anyone confirm what exactly happens?

they are just conformation the phone has recieved it, they just sometimes get delayed, just like normal texts when the networks being an ****

OK, you send a text with the report flag set.
Your network takes the text and works out where the other phone is (same network or another).
Text gets routed either to your networks SMS delivery system (if the other phones on the same network as you) or the network interconnect for routing to another network.
The text goes through the transports and get dropped in to the delivery system, this system checks that it can find the phone (ie, its in coverage or switched on).
It sends the text to the phone.
After the phones gets the text it sends a message back to the delivery system to say its got it and then the system deletes the message.
If the report flag was set, it sends the 'I've delivered the massage' text back to the original phone.

    Done.

All the above information is correct (apart from the friend), it confirms when the text message has been delivered to the handset. It's very easy to test, switch a phone off then try sending a text to with a delivery report set - the phone will show on its internal system that it successfully sent the message but you won't get a delivery report back until you power on the phone.
