I'm not an expert, but I guess that if you were standing riding up a gradient it would work your stomach muscles.
Sitting down, I don't think it would do a lot.

both but mostly your legs.

yes....

no such thing as 'toning' you can target certain muscles to make them bigger/stronger but you cant target selective areas for fat loss

cycled about 30 miles a week last summer across say 8 weeks never noticed any difference to anywhere on my body, perhaps I should try a different gear making it harder to pedal.

Yes, try Lederhosen, 2 sizes too small.

mate are you trying to lose your gut? you need to run 3-4 times per week for 40min at a pace that would be too uncomfortable to talk

as long as its at a good pace mate yes, weight loss is the easiest thing in the world to do * you just run every day. simple as that

*DISCLAIMER for the pedants....unless you have a medical condition or are just bone idle :w00t:

you need to lose fat before you can tone surely?

cycling will help you lose fat.....as will any form of excercise

key is to make sure you are expending more calories than you are taking on

cycling will also do if thats what you want to be doing
its just any aerobic activity which makes you work at a certain physical level - it doesn't have to be jogging.
if you want to cycle then dont just start jogging because some guy tells you to jog and not to cycle
basically all you need is to be more active and eat less

id not recommend doing any activity for 40 mins that makes you too uncomfortable to talk either
40min is a fair bit of time and should be done at lower intensity than that if going steady and/or mix in a few periods of more intense exercise.
If you are cycling out in the country and are going up and down hills etc you will naturally vary intensity also so getting a varied and more interesting workout.

Ok here goes - the simple guide to a better looking tum...

If you do strengthening exercises eg sit-ups, core exercises that stress the stomach muscles, you will "tone" up the look of your tum.

However, if you have excess fat in your abdominal region (your tum), then you will need to do some form of aerobic exercise (cycling, swimming, running, fast walking etc) ie, anything that raises your heart rate and that you sustain for at least 20 minutes. Otherwise, this fat will hide your lovely toned stomach muscles!

If you don't exercise for more than 20 minutes, you only burn the energy stores your body holds on to (called glycogen). After 20 minutes, the body starts to burn fat. You cannot dictate where this fat will come from, it will be lost from all areas of the body!

spot on.....just because you use your legs doesnt mean you will lose weight from there. fat is stored all over the body, once youve lost a bit then you can start toning them stomach muscles with crunches and what not

edit:as above

i used to cycle a LOT. it was the only exercise i got, i have never been toned but was 'trim' when i cycled

I have trouble running, it just nearly kills me. But cycling I can do and have always enjoyed it.

In the last 12 months I have gone from 14 stone 3 pounds (5ft 6in so you can imagine I was way too big) I am now 11 stone exactly but I just cant shift the fat on my belly. I am currently doing 16 miles on my mountain bike with plenty of hills and I do it in 1 hour 15 mins and this week I have done that 5 times so 80 miles.

Just wish my love handles would go but it is stuborn, maybe due to being 39yrs old I dunno. Obviously my diet has changed drastically as well as excercise but I am sure the cycling has helped me get into shape and I am the fittest I have ever been:thumbsup:

Cycling is a good none impact excercise and as people say do it for more than 20 mins and get your heart rate up. They reakon about 5 miles of cycling is about the same as 1 mile of running but it will all depend on the intensity etc.

think I will stick at the cycling then just make it harder and do some hills, I actually live somewhere where its very flat so will have to travel further afireld for some hills.

Not going swimming its £4.30 odd a go, I'd be in there less than an hour.

actually no it doesn't, being overweight is dependant on your absolute body weight and the need to be toned isn't ... its to do with muscle mass/body fat
eg arnie was overweight but toned

well I'm 5ft 6 and weigh 9st,my bmi is ok, I would not be classed as overweight, perhaps the 2 kids I have had, affect my stomach a bit, and no I didn't get stretch marks either, didn't put on more than 2 stone when I was pregnant, like I said just wanted to tone up a bit.
