Does such a thing exist - adapter to make something remote controllable???

I am trying to get a DAB radio for my mother. She is disabled and would really like one with a remote control so she doesn't have to get up every time she wants to switch it on or off or to mute it if the phone rings. I can only find a couple that have a remote and they are expensive ones. I just wondered is there is some sort of adapter that you could plug into the headphone socket that would then make it accessible by a remote control. If it doesn't already exist maybe one of the techie people on here could start to make them, I'll take 10% of the fortune you will make for coming up with the idea!!!!

    remote control socket maybe?

If it is simply to switch it on/off, you can purchase the electric socket remotes? You have an adaptor on the plug which has a remote on it so you can power everything off remotely.

3 remote control sockets from asda for £8

or £5 for 1 from maplin,

Might want to look out for one like this. shame it's oos @ the min bargainstock.co.uk/Pro…156

Try ipod docks as they have the remote functionality and include DAB. Quality might not be brilliant but this might do...

And if its not what you want easy to take back. It would also mean she can change station and you could always buy her an ipod for Christmas

couldn't the radio be placed next to where she normally sits?

    This.

It's the most practical way, could she have it on a table near her? this way she could change channels and volume too, rather than just on off.

Also, you get all the radio channels on Sky, I presume they are free to air, do you get them with Freeview? Maybe something like that might be better?

Many thanks for all the ideas, I really like the look of the Bush radio in Argos, it is the sort of style she likes! It is on ebay so I may go for that. I hadn’t though of an iPod dock, I’ll have a browse of those too. Although she is disabled, she does move around quite a bit and she is always in the wrong place when the phone rings and she wants to mute the radio! I still think a plug in adaptor is a good idea...maybe I could make one myself! Thanks again, I have spread some rep around.

Now all we need to sort is how to keep the remote within reach if she … Now all we need to sort is how to keep the remote within reach if she moves about a lot :whistling:

She has a sort of trolley thing - like a walking frame on wheels but with two shelves - she keeps all her essential bits and peices on that (phone, keys, purse, sockets remote control) and it moves with her!
