dog bite through letterbox

    Curious.

Our dog is very protective, he's not big but has a heck of a bark. It seems he has come close to catching the fingers of some church do gooder stuffing their leaflet through the door, my oh is concerned he might actually catch someone and we could suffer some kind of complaint. i on the other hand, am not concerned, if someone is stupid enough to stick their fingers through its their own darn fault....right?

No you dont want to risk anything! why dont you get a letter cage.

nope its your responsiblity...your dog, your home, your property.

Id put a sign on your front door, saying please to not stick hands/fingers through the door due to door is playful!

I think you could get in hot water.

If you can't/don't want to teach your dog to stop the behaviour, then get a post box.

    Sue their fingers for trespassing.

If someone complains that your dog bit them.............deny it and tell them it was you. :-D

p.s - I take no responsiblity if they have you put down. ;-)

    Remove your dogs teeth !

    simples:thumbsup:

hmm, interesting. Both of my dogs would eat someone's hand if they actually saw a hand come through our letterbox.

It never occured to me that I could get in trouble for it.... Strange times we live in

Your suppose to display a sign saying you have a dog in all circumstances, friendly or not. Dog lives here, beware of the dog etc etc it covers you ass with trespassers.

Someone going about their lawful business is not a trespasser.

No it is not their fault. A letter box is for people to post letters through.

As you are aware of a danger at your property it is entirely your responsibility to ensure you take action to minimise the risks. You would be negligent to not do anything about it.

Q: Can posting a "Beware of Dog" sign help to offset any liability if the dog bites?

A: Possibly. The sign can help to alert others of the presence of the dog. But if an attack occurs, the specific facts will determine whether there is any liability.
This.

They have an implied permission to be on the land for the purposes of their job. If they were to post their letter and then kick over your prize winning daffodils they become trespassers from the very moment that they stepped on to your property.

Law and ‘Beware of the Dog’ Signs

The law takes a peculiar stance when it comes to the use of ‘beware of the dog’ signs.

If such a sign is on display when the dog attacks a trespasser, then its owner is liable for prosecution, because it could be argued that by displaying the sign they knew the dog was dangerous. However, if the dog attacks an intruder when no sign is visible then the court would decree that the owner was unaware of the threat of the animal, and is therefore not liable for court action.

So for those considering a sign, according to the law if you have a harmless pet dog then by all means display a ‘beware of the dog’ sign as a deterrent, but if you have a dog that would be liable to attack an intruder then don’t, as you might get into trouble

Possibly is the most important thing here. Possibly is more no than yes.

found this on another forum"I spoke to Police about what would happen and … found this on another forum"I spoke to Police about what would happen and who would be responsible and they advised that if someone puts their hand through the letterbox without being invited to do so [?] it could amount to trespass and the dog is only doing its 'job' - i.e. protect the house. I now have an arrangement with the postman that letters may be left on a windowsill and I try to be observant when he calls. All other leaflet depositors are warned by a 'I live here!' card attached to the window. The Police are satisfied that I have warned people and that they then choose to enter my land/home with the understanding that a dog is present and have therefore accepted any consequences. This is what I was told."

I am sorry but that is utter nonsense. A dog is only doing its job?!? A dogs job is to nip at someones hand!!

If you believe that your dog is a danger to the public then you are still liable.

That is fundamental and contained under Section 1 of the Occupiers Liability Act 1984.

If you have those draft excluders on your letterbox or a double flap letter box then U usually have to push leaflets through by putting your hand in as they bend to easily.

Not surprised he's a nipper! Its a terrier (cross i believe?)

It is nonsense. Such a sign will not absolve yourself from responsibility if you have something on your property that you consider dangerous.

With that in mind, does that mean you can have a sign on your house saying "Beware of the barbwire"...no.

The correct precaution to take would be to install a letter drop.

Personally, i'd get the dog sign (may as well for a quid!!) Then i'd also get the letter cage. Job done.
