Dogs and Leather Sofa's... Good idea?

I'm contemplating on buying a lil Jack Russell for my son (he really wants a pet!). But I'm worried about it tearing down my house, including my leather sofa's - not to mention the smell that comes with them!

I've seen lil cage type things, that you can keep the dog in and let it out as an when, but they look abit cruel :(.

I have a back garden to keep it outside also, but with the winter coming that doesn't seem like such a good idea. I've never had a pet before, therefore am looking for some advice, opinions and tips on keeping the dog in the house.

have you got a hour a day free to walk it

Yes, that wouldn't be a problem...

If you already have reservations about the smell, dirt,it making a mess etc etc,it's probably not a good idea.

any dog properly trained and excercised will not bother you furniture or make a smell in your house ,Its just a matter of whether you have the time to train and excercise it, jack Russels are a partcularly snappy breed also.

Whats the point in having a dog esp a jack russell as a pet if you are worried about the smell and destructiveness they can cause? I have 2 jrts, they chewed as pups, they are wilful, they need lots of exercise, they leave muddy footprints/hair everywhere, and yes when they get wet they smell.
It is cruel to keep dogs caged/outside except for when it suits you.
Why not get your son a couple of rats, easily tamed, kept in a cage, easy to keep clean etc

its a personal thing but jack russells can be yappers!
and yep with the best will in the world the house will smell different...
bear in mind other pros and cons
cost to feed, vaccinate and insure or vet bills, holiday care, being tied to being home etc.
I only say this as its your first pet and you need to have a good think 1st. I love dogs but would never have one.

Snappy breed... Really oO ! I'd better have to reconsider my choice of Dog. Want something cute, not too vicious or one that will grow too big (but not a Chiuahua!)!...

Border terriers are a great choice if you want a small dog but dont want a girly breed,Just do a bit of googling and you will find what breeds are good for your needs,

I was like you worried about smell and dirt etc as done my place to a high standard and didnt want it messed up but i had always wanted my own dog, well i left it for a couple of years then i got a rottweiler which is a lot bigger then a jack russell.

Yes as a pup they do make mistake, even had it wee and be sick in my house and test me by jumping on my sofa as soon as i leave the room , but they soon learn what they can and cant do , and once you form a bond with it you soon forget about the little mistake as like a baby they will sometime be sick and have a few accidents as a pup.

once they get a bit older though they dont normal wee or chew or do naughty things , unless of course you dont be quite firm from the start and let it get away with murder.

My dog does not smell but i guess its cause i buy all thouse dog sprays baby powder smell ones and spray it all the time lol ..... i also brush it most days so less hair in house.

But i wouldnt be without her now.

I suggest reading all about the breed you are getting , and if you cant cope with any mess then best you dont get one as every dog will make a mess one time or another.

i had a jr pup years ago for my son..it was as soft as anything and he used to hold it on his knee in his buggy when we went out as it was like a baby! unfortunately it also yapped ALL NIGHT lol

It depends what you want a dog for but if you're thinking just for a pet then a heinz 57 is good. Just choose a smaller one.

i think most small dogs are yappy, jack russells are very hyperactive from my experience, the 2 ive had use to have a mad hour where they would dart round the house, run up and down the stairs, they are nice dogs though, mine never lived with young children although my nephew was young at the time we had them and they were always good with him but didnt like it when he cried.

By "snappy" i dont mean vicious ,Just that they are a particularly lively breed and like to make their presence felt, A jack Russel is no more likely to cause serious injury than any other dog but they might put friends off visiting,

My son is 8yrs... He's specifically asked for a dog - I'll have to look at other breeds, is there anywhere specific (website) I can look to tell me the different ones? I've seen a few (being walked locally) that look cute, but not sure what breed they are and never got round to asking the owner.

Dont get one - if your main worry is the state of your house/furniture, it'll give you heart failure to find little puddles and chewed up furniture.

Why don't you offer to walk other people's dog so you get the pleasureable bit without the cost of food, vacinations and vet bills... the list is endless. My pooch should be made of gold the amount he's cost me over the years!

It's really timely having a dog, I walk mine before work, when I get back and bed time - at least an hour a day in all weathers, that snow last year didn't put him off. Different dogs have differing exercise needs, seek advice and look for something which doesn't need much exercise, grooming and is calm natured (something like a king charles spaniel). Voluntary work at your local rescue centre would be a great starting point to see whether you/child has the committment.

I got bitten when i was a kid by a loopy Jack Russell.........i had the last laugh though when the evil little cretin was put to sleep.

Still love dogs though and they are easy to train not to jump on furniture etc.....just takes patience and being firm.

Well the sprays are suppose to be for dogs and they have oils in them , her coat is nice and shiny..... yes of course dogs smell but with a certain diet and other factors can help it smell less.

Some people are just scroungy and don't even clean their homes correctly , so maybe that's why some peoples home smells bad when they have a dog , but i clean my home daily and i honestly cant smell a dog in my house and other people cant either.

There's nothing worse than that wet dog smell though ewwww

Yup this is when i find my dog dont smell that great lol

I feel if peoples dogs chew or misbehave as it gets older have not really trained the dog in the correct manner as any dog which is trained the correct way want chew or misbehave once its older, its about being the pack leader and not letting the dog be the one in control of you.

I suppose your right, what about cleaning them - can you just hose them down or do you put them in the bath? I'm not being funny but if I'd prefer NOT to use the same bath my dog had been in - regardless if it was cleaned/bleached.

OP wants a dog not an Ewok!

Get a Golden Retriever. Best dogs ever (particularly with kids.) But they do need lots of exercise and dont like being on their own for too long..... so dont get one if thats a problem.

    No wonder men go gay!

The best piece of advice I have seen given to prospective dog owners is 'do not decide on how cute they look'. It's a very bad starting place. You need to do lots of research ( google/Books/ask advice)and go for a dog with good temperament and that means, not just the breed but seeing the parents when you finally decide what sort of dog would be suitable for your individual situation.

Jack Russells are generally yappy and snappy and take a lot of looking after and TBH if you are properly house proud then a dog of any sort isn't a good idea.
The type of furniture doesn't matter as your dog, if you get one, will learn PDQ that s/he is to have nothing to do with the furniture.

A crate, used well, is ideal for any dog but especially a small one as it is their safe lair and they become house trained very quickly as well. Not that house-training is a biggy if you are there when you bring the tot home. A couple of indoors wees and maybe one poo is generally about it. A crate isn't a 'lock up out ot the way for hours on end ' though.

I cannot imagine life without a dog but you need to have time and money and patience. Don't get one just because your son wants one. At 8 he cannot take full responsibility for walks, vet visits, cost etc etc and I doubt he's even thought about cleaning up!

Well i dont keep asking people , and to be honest if friends were so a nal about stuff then i guess they wouldnt be friends.

In the usa people take the dogs to get groomed almost daily , i guess thats wrong also.

I currently have a destructive, naughty but lovable 9 month old labrador called Hudson. To date he has chewed a hole in the stair carpet, eaten the plaster off the wall in the kitchen, chewed one of my sons footy boots, chewed my sisters sunglasses and wrecked my garden, we walk him twice a day for up to an hour at a time, he has also cost us over £1500 in operations at the vets due to a genetic bone disorder ( luckily covered by insurance) so PLEASE think carefully about the cost involved too!

Having said all that,I wouldnt swap him for the world and we are currently looking to adopt a 2-3 year old bitch as a companion for him, and it is heartbreaking trawling through all the rescue websites, just in my area alone there are hundreds of unwanted dogs looking for new homes.

Also we have had a crate for Hudson since he was 8 weeks and he loves it, he takes himself off to bed in the kitchen at 10pm every night and happily spends time in there just chillin, we have even removed the gate to it now.
