The resources of the health care sector cannot be allocated efficiently by market forces. Explain this statement, showing why the operation of market forces in the health sector cannot in principle achieve the economic efficiency of perfect competition. Refer to agency, moral hazard and Supplier-Induced Demand in your answer

    What does it even mean

It's something to do with economics. Cite the 'Credit Crunch' as the problem!

I wouldn't know where to start mate!

    Just an essay

Don't bother doing it then :).

Sounds like reasons why you can't run the health service like a business - ie not inanimate objects, dealing with people etc.. unpredictable behaviours/motivations/circumstances where humans are involved ie Psychological/mental health problems/emotions-all encompassed within the Health service remit.

Also, newly advancing technologies bring about 'new' diagnostic methods - 'new' illnesses and eventually 'new' related cures...

I've had no sleep, so not @ best - just initial thoughts.

    Thanks

just a few ideas for you to work with:
economic efficiency of perfect competition would rely on various competing forces providng services to "sick" people. However, this would often mean that numerous conditions/diseases would be overlooked (not provided for) on the basis that they would be non - profitable or uneconomical or the demand was not great enough. This undermines the whole concept of health care and would mean that people who suffer with a condition/disease that is rare would go probably go untreated or be forced to pay a an inflated price.

Further it would rely on the concept that health care should be paid for by the consumer which throws up various moral issues in that should a civilised soceity allow people to suffer just because they are unable to pay for the health care? Surely everybody is entitled to health care on the basis that human rights are universal. The aim of a government is to advance the interests of its nation and therefore the government is in the best position to provide health care as it will not seek to profit from it but rather ensure that citizens are treated. Private companies are answerable only to its shareholders and as a result profit is more important than the potential receipitant of the health care - moraly dubious

You may wish to discuss whether it is moral to have companies profiting from people's pain and suffering.

I read the first sentence, then my mind wandered to chocolate...

Getting a few snippets from a mate

basically in the health care system you don't know whats coming up with reagrds to health care

you can't just buy drugs based on which diseases are in the news at the momen

you have to try and give everyone an equal level of care

mention that its pulled by the decisions of doctors and the drugs and tools they are after. rather than what the sales man is pushing, although doctors are influenced by sales men

you also don't know how much you are going to be spending on bed etc

cleaning also has a cost, this could be done by and agnecy although I would question outsourcing cleaning. I would argue that the outsourcing of cleaning leads to the employment of minimum wage workers who might be immigrants who have a differnt perception of cleanliness. They are also likley to be short term employed and therefore might be unaware of the conciquences of their actions

    Hope this helps
