Main ones are tarmac and blocked paving. We have got blocked paving - more resistant. Tarmac can sink.

Depends on the size of your drive.

Goodluck - best advice is get a couple of quotes from different builders

Disagree with this, i dont think i've seen a single block paved drive that hasn't sunk to some degree. At our old house we had printed concrete, quite expensive but very resilient to wear and tear.

That depends solely on how well it is done.

    Dont get clay bricks!

We were told that there wouldnt be a problem and they look really nice etc - we have to get it professionally cleaned twice a year to get rid of moss. Then needs re-sanding.

Duh! Block paving also shows tyre tracks over time.

    I love that imprinted concrete

I had some block paving done last year and its dodgy in one or two places:w00t:

    Duh?

Again, it depends solely on how well it is done. You see good and bad examples of block paving.

The imprinted is lovely and the one I would go for if I could afford it, go on a long walk and look at the drives, when you find a nice one, knock and ask.........They usually are quite nice after the initial shock as English people don't talk very much!!

agreed in my close 4 of us have used the same block pavers, with mine … agreed in my close 4 of us have used the same block pavers, with mine being done the last and the first 6+ years ago and they look as good now as they did then, the 2 lads who do these drives are fantastic

Exactly, on my parent's street there are numerous people with block paving on their drives. A few are very poor, but many (including my parents) are still like brand new after 6 years when several were done by the same company over a summer. People are too used to seeing poorly done drives and assuming it is the method rather than lack of ability. My girlfriend's parent's drive (which is a very expensive house) is also perfect and that must be nearly 10 years old looking at it; but it would have been done by very capable people.

Just make sure you get references and not from people who had their drives done a week ago.

In terms of flood protection, some councils are insisting that new driveways are permeable block
Just check that your local council allows solid surface driveways.

These links show possible solutions including a way of building a water reservoir to beat hosepipe bans in the summer.

We're the same, just had our front monoblocked in September and next door used the same guy over 6 years ago and although his looks a little washed out, it's still as flat :-D

thankyou for all the help guys

I'd have some decent scalpings compacted and levelled onto the ground then have a few tonnes of decent sized gravel spread over it. Don't use pea shingle as it'll get stuck in tyres and shoes and get everywhere. Apart from initial cost advantages there's zero maintanance for ever, non-slip when icy or wet, perfect drainage and also warns of intruders at night.

If anything like where i live, will also end up covered in cat poo..lol

We had ours block paved and really pleased with it. We found a local guy and he gave us a few addresses he'd done so we could have a look and we even went to see his house that he'd done quite a few years previous.
