    Dolphin Rings - amazing!

The video link in post 2 is of dolphins playing with silver coloured rings which they have the ability to make under water to play with.
It isnt known how they learn this, or if its an inbred ability.

As if by magic the dolphin does a quick flip of its head and a silver ring appears in front of its pointed beak.
The ring is a solid, donut shaped bubble about 2-ft across, yet it doesnt rise to the surface of the water! It stands upright in the water like a magic doorway to an unseen dimension.

The dolphin then pulls a small silver donut from the larger one. Looking at the twisting ring for one last time a bite is taken from it, causing the small ring to collapse into a thousands of tiny bubbles which head upward towards the waters surface.
After a few moments the dolphin creates another ring to play with.
There also seems to be a separate mechanism for producing small rings, which a dolphin can accomplish by a quick flip of its head.

An explanation of how dolphins make these silver rings is that they are air-core vortex rings. Invisible, spinning vortices in the water are generated from the tip of a dolphins dorsal fin when it is moving rapidly and turning.
When dolphins break the line, the ends are drawn together into a closed ring.
The higher velocity fluid around the core of the vortex is at a lower pressure than the fluid circulating farther away.
Air is injected into the rings via bubbles released from the dolphins blowhole.

The energy of the water vortex is enough to keep the bubbles from rising for a reasonably few seconds of play time.

    They are excellent amazing creatures.

Thanks snowtiger, that was excellent. Here's a quote I just found to add to that.

"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always how they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man has always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins, because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars, and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reason." (Douglas Adams)

How wonderful I bet that was brilliant !!
I would so love to swim with them but to be honest I'm not that confident in the water, I can swim but really like to be only in water where I can stand up if I want to!!

the ocean world place we visited had 8 dolphins and for the younger or less confident theres a dolphin encounter where as you dont swim with them but go in their pool and stand on a ledge so youre not out of your depth and the dolphins then play and swim around you, dance for you and you feed them

theres where we went and the dolphins seemed so happy, they had free roam of all their water space but chose to be around people, when we swam with them in egypt they were kept in a much smaller pool and didnt seem very happy

oh and........... theyve got a white tiger there too lol

OH YES this would suit me fine!! thanks for letting me know, I have just updated my holiday plans for next year!

Whilst on holidays in Portugal last week I had the pleasure of taking the kids to the ZooMarine Park to see the bottlenose Dolphins. The show with their trainers was also a fantastic spectacle. They clain to have the oldest living bottlenose dolphin called Sam who is 41. It was an amazing display of strength synchronisation and sheer abilty, to do what they had done. I was sitting amazed never mind the children.
