Domains - how to keep prices low?

My old domain has expired. I have barely used it but determined to get back into websites.
If I search for the .com version, I can get it for £1.99
The expired one is .co.uk and if I renew it work GoDaddy it is £11.99 so not too bad but will be if I don't use it!
I'm sorted with hosting.
I don't mind transferring to other companies etc but I've forgotten about whether there's a fee or not.
Anyone who works with websites, do you move around to find a cheaper deal or does this not exist in the domain world?

Yes that's what tend to happen. My domain expires and then I purchase another with the introductory offer but want to try to stick to one now 😃
I usually find a namecheap promo code to renew them a bit cheaper, rather than transferring. UK domains are expensive, I sick to COM’s.
