    Double ended USB cable?

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap cable with a USB connection either end? Apparantly, if you use this cable with your Sky+ box (one of the sockets in the flap at the front of the box), you can put recorded stuff onto your laptop, which sounds good to me !!

    Thanks in advance

It's exactly the same as a USB thingy me bob on a laptop/pc (gosh, I'm soooo impressed at my technical terms :-D )

It's basically a cable with 2 of the Flat, thin USB connectors at either end, like the top one shown in your picture

Essentially there are four types of USB port/connectors. A and B (as Iom-RF posted) as well as male and female versions of both.

What you find on a laptop/PC tends to be type A female, into which you plug a type A male......

So you need type A but is it male to male, male to female or female to female? (I'd assume from the described usage male to male, but it doesn't hurt to check)

Just bought one of these for the same thing..

im guessing its male to male, one to stick into the usb slot in the sky box an one into the usb slot on the pc?

Male to Male was the technical term I had no clue about, thanks guys.

And the link above from Clarence shows exactly what I was looking for, and have now purchased for considerably less than the £15 asked for in the little shop near me !!

    Thanks very much everyone

That part I haven't figured out yet, but apparantly it's quite easy. My friend works with someone who does it all the time, so if it's not straight forward after a bit of fiddling about, I'll get him to ask this bloke how to do it then post it on here

Try googling it and you will find that the files are encrypted and when the sky+ box plays them it has a decrypter to play the files. This meaning you will not be able to do anything with the files if you can get them on your laptop. At the moment the usb connectors on the box are useless and sky will reveal what they will be used for soon.

Maybe it is just for extra storage so that if your Sky + hard drive runs out of storage you can plug in an external hard drive for some extra space for all of your corry eps.

Probably true, but in that case why/will it let you copy when the option to "Copy" comes up on the recorded items menu..?

I don't see a copy on my personal planner

EDIT: actually copy is referring to an external source such as a dvd recorder or a video so you can record them to disc or tape.

The chap my friend works with already uses just this cable to copy the programs he has recorded onto his laptop and he does it with no trouble or extra programs, which is why I am assuming it's straight forward to figure out

Well all I am doing is telling you what I have read off loads of forums by googling it. i myself was interested in doing this but after researching it, it seems impossible.

When I get my cable through the door, I'll have a go and if I can't figure it out, I'll get my friend to get the instructions and do another post here to let you all know, but he definately already does it, so fingers crossed it works for us all
