    Download Problem

    Wondering if someone could help.

Having a problem with my home PC, whenever I download something upon completion I try to open the file and always get errors basically telling me the file isn't complete i.e. .rar file I get 'Unexpected end of archive' and it happens with any file type from .mp3 to .exe.

I've tried loads of different programs and loads of different sources without any luck.

I have a netgear wired router on virgin media's broadband - although I feel that info is probably irrelevant.

    Anyone have any ideas?

How are you trying to open them

i.e. are you right-clicking & saying 'open', are you clicking on 'save' & then trying to open them as soon as they've downloaded, are you downloading them to a folder & then trying to open them later?

Well, i.e. from download.com I download a program, so click 'Save' instead of 'open' - I normally download it to my desktop.

Once download has finished, I try to open the file by double clicking on the icon for the download, error message.

Tried downloading to different folders with no luck just in case that was the problem.

I had to make 74 Windows updates to my dad's computer last night and had to run update maybe 30-40 times as there's something seriously wrong with the computer. After all that hassle explorer.exe is now broken and i'm going to get in trouble - no fair! :-(

Restore your pc to yesterday? Mbeeching......

And Ronaldeano, it sounds like your internet keeps cutting up, therefore ending the download before its finished. You should download a download manager eg Flashget, that may help

Anyone know the file I have to run to access that though? I don't have an interface so all I can do is type in program names at the moment to run them.

so does the pc fail to boot into windows?..even in SAFE MODE?..if not it sounds like you're going to have to reinstall windows.

MBeeching, right-click on the bar at the bottom of the screen & select 'Task Manager'.

Under the 'Processes' Tab, is Explorer.exe shown as running (under 'Image Name')? If so, then highlight it & click on 'End Process' - ignore the warning about the world coming to an end if you continue:-D

Then, regardless of whether or not Explorer.exe was running, go to the 'File' drop-down menu, select 'New Task (Run...)'. Type in explorer.exe & see what happens...

Ronaldeano, I'd have to agree with Samthorley. There are free programs available that alow you to pick up where you left off when downloading from the 'net (although for the moment at least I can't think of names - I'll post when I think of one:whistling: ).

That's actually what i'm already doing. I basically get a blank intro to windows and i'm doing everything via task manager. There's no way the computer illiterate will get there heads round that nonsense. Basically explorer.exe won't boot full stop.

Been using my dad's TalkTalk connection this evening - it's a damned joke!

But therein lies the problem - I can't download said programs because of the original problem, lol.

And I take it you mean such as Download Accelerator Pro.
