i think if you get 6 points within 2 years of passing your test you will have to re do the test. the points you have will stay on your license for 3 years i believe

Simple, don't speed etc once you've passed your test. Shouldn't be an issue.

You can't drive a car on 6 points in the first 2 years. They would not allow you to take the test until they'd expired...

Not always that simple. Even excellent drivers can get caught out on confusing roads, going over the 'line' or speeding where it isn't clear - it's just happened on roads here where the council have had to remark everything because it flips between 30 and 40...

Be very careful - your motorcycle points count on car and vice versa...

(I don't agree that 'L' plate infringements should carry 3 points though - should just be a warning or fine)

i got the points on 30/01/06

so the instructer was correct by saying if i get 3 more points i will have to retake my test,if thats the case i should wait 6 months for the points that i have on my licence now to come off and start without any... lol

They chose to break the law before, I'm merely pointing out the fact that if they are prepared to break the law they should suffer the consequences.
I drive (well, not currently) a moped but wouldn't be so stupid as to go on it without my L plates.
if somebody has points on their licence they should be more carfeul surely? It suggests that they aren't as good as driving as they perceive themselves as being. Ego's aye.

Its actually four years I think, not three for points to get removed.. The two years re-test starts from the day you pass, so if you take test 2moro you cannot get a total of 6 points in the first two years. (direct.gov.uk/en/…550)
If you can wait, it will make your eventual insurance cheaper.

Points are valid for 3 years but stay on your license for 4 years. Most insurance companies will want to know about any points accrued in the previous 5 years. Very confusing!

As long as you don't get any more points before 30/01/09 you will be fine.

They are still valid points in the forth year, but they aren't counted toward the 12 point auto ban (but are counted in the forth year toward any other limits such as the 6 point new driver retest, I believe):

If you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years, … If you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years, you’ll be liable to be disqualified under the 'totting-up' system. This is shown on your licence as TT99.

so as long as i dont get any more points till 30/1/09 i will be ok and then i will be 6 points away from the risk of being banned (not that i want to get banned)its just that i have test in a months time and will worry if i pass that i could lose my licence so fast .......

so will the current 3 points on my licence drop of on the 30/01/09?

No - I believe that you have to pay to have them removed - Not sure of cost though

Yes it will drop off after 4 years.
You will have to send it away to get new one with no points on.

Or if you request an address or any other change you will get the new one with no points.
Nothing to pay.

See the Direct Gov link here : direct.gov.uk/en/…490

now im confused even morejust copied and pasted this-

What effect do penalty points have on provisional licences and recently qualified driving licences?

You can be given penalty points even if you’re on a Provisional Licence. You’re as much at risk from offences like speeding as a fully-qualified driver.

If you reach six or more penalty points within two years of passing your Driving Test (ie during the probationary period), the DVLA will automatically revoke your Driving Licence when notified by a court or fixed penalty office. Penalty points counting towards this total of six include any you incurred before passing the test, as long as the offence took place not more than three years before the latest penalty point offence. Points imposed after the probationary period will also count if the offence is committed during that period. Passing the retest does not remove penalty points from your licence, and if the total reaches 12, you are liable to be disqualified from driving by a court.

It sounds to me that if i get another 3 points after 30/01/09 then it wont total to 6 points as it would of been more then 3 years after gettting the original 3...that right???

Basically if you have 3 points now, then when you pass your test you cannot afford to get another three within the next 2 years of driving. After the 2 years the limit is upped to 12.

Original Poster

oh i thought the points are valid for 3 years but show on your licence for 4 years therfore wouldnt make it so much of a risk if i got more after the 30/01/09 as the original ones wont be active

Don't worry too much about points and stuff - pass your test first! As long as you are careful, you have nothing to worry about.

will def have to get a tom tom or sonthing to warn me of speed cameras etc lol
