Driving Licence changes coming. Are you aware ?

NOTICE: Now in effect - Your paper counterpart is no longer valid

The government have announced they are abolishing the paper counterpart to the driving licence. As of the 8th June 2015, the paper section will become invalid and should be destroyed.

    gov.uk/gov…ges

Please note, if you do not have the modern driving licence (plastic photocard and paper counterpart), i.e you have a licence issued to you prior to 1998, then do not destroy that one as that licence will remain valid.

Currently, the paper counterpart holds any endorsements you have for such offences as speeding, etc. This information maybe required by your employer or by a hire car company amongst others. After 8th June 2015, there will be a new system for these people to check your driving record called Share My Driving Record that will provide the minimum information required from the driver record to those who have a right to see it. The police and other authorities will have immediate access to your record as they currently do anyway, through a roadside PNC check.

You do not need to take any other action. Upon renewing your licence (example when changing address), you will only receive the plastic card section in future. The paper counterpart should be securely destroyed AFTER 8th June 2015, as it will no longer be valid anyway but contains personal information and you should avoid just binning it.

The government are taking these steps as part of the modernisation of Britains motoring bureaucracy, such as the previous abolition of the Tax Disc (see post http://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/misc/car-tax-disc-changes-oct-1st-2014-aware-ready-1967654)

I will update this post as more information comes online and will try to answer questions, though please, follow the link and read the dot gov website info first to avoid asking easily answered by reading the article type questions. Thanks

    - Not sure I like the idea of that, I have no points personally but I don't really want some gimp in a car hire place being able to spy on people.

They will only be able to check your licence online via a onetime use code or time limited access. They won't be able to access just anyone's info without that code, and you will request it for them when needed. You likely carry more personal info on a debit/credit/store/loyalty card database than the info that this system will provide. It's the nature of the age we live in and will not change

Never had any endorsements, but if you get any - How can you check on the expiry date of them now? can you access your own records online? or will you need to pay for them?

    Hi
    Thank you for the info

On a unrelated note .. My tax is due next month .. How does that work out?

You will get a reminder as usual but when you pay you don't get a disc to display anymore. Lady at post office says smart roads, database and cameras can check your car registrations and report untaxed vehicles.Might be worth checking with the government site or similar.

Thank You .... So I still take my documents to the Post Office then ?

Gotta wonder why if it's invalid, why it needs to be destroyed.

You have to pay 50p a minute to phone them up I think. There is a thread on this already in misc, if you can be bothered to dig it up.

yes, you can still renew at post office but don't get a paper disc.I kept my receipt-just in case:)

Oh, great. I have only got my original paper licence from '92, and it's already a chore to get anything authorised with that as it is!
I remember trying to use it to get a mobile phone contract, and the store staff was arguing that I must have the plastic part, as it's not possible to just have the paper part, oh no.
Trouble is, I'm not planning on moving, and I flatly refuse to pay for a new licence- especially one that I have to pay to renew every few years...

So you can now hire a car abroad with 9 points ?

They have no other way if checkng, do they......

Another nice little earner for the gov?

Abolition of the tax disc not pulling in enough?

How much is this new licence going to cost the motorist?

Call me a cynic but it seems to me that every time the government 'makes things better for us' it involves emptying our pockets.

Every government always screws the cash out of us one way or the other; one of these days the politicians will find a way of charging us for the air we breath.

That's madness, they should first replace anyone with an old style licence with a modern one FOC, there will be thousands of people destroying a valid and necessary licence.

Except many of those people probably don't want the modern licence that has to be renewed every ten years (Photo ID)

Not really. I worked in the DVLA contact centre and the staff handling these queries are multiskilled. The main duty is taking general calls then taking the specialist calls as and when they come in.

Realistically this is a minor, minor scheme and wouldn't have any significant impact on staffing.
