    thanks.

I think its cause its used as ID, so i needs to be kept up to date.

    Thanks!

Didn't realise that as I expect many others didn't either.

Got 8 years left, so I'm OK for now.

i used to work for the DVLA and i'm pretty sure you won't have to pay for an updated card but i'd check!

you do need to pay, i paid something like £17 a few months back

Was posted over a month ago at link below but worth a reminder !

i was always under the impression cos they where the ones wanting you to renew the card so they would at least cough up for it! I know they charge if you want to change your pic for vanity reasons.

    Renewing your photo
    taken this off the website:

    With a renewal application

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will send you a renewal application pack two months before your photo is due to expire. You’ll need to:

    * complete the enclosed form
    * include a new passport type photo of yourself that’s been taken within the last month (you don’t need the back of the photo signed)
    * return both parts of your driving licence (photocard and counterpart document)
    * enclose a cheque or postal order for £20.00 (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or you’re aged 70 or over)
    * send your completed application and fee to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DH

If you have changed your name, you’ll also need to provide id

It was £17.50 to renew your license every 10 years, but now they have put it up to £20, the robbing ...........

The license is still valid as proof you hold a valid drivers license after the photo has run out, but you will no longer be able to use it as Proof of ID after that date.

Not quite as simple as that though:

A DVLA spokesman said that drivers who failed to renew their licences … A DVLA spokesman said that drivers who failed to renew their licences "are still entitled to drive but are potentially committing the offence of failing to surrender their licence. Conviction by a court could lead to a fine of up to £1,000". He added that the ten-year renewal was necessary because faces changed.

According to theAA, nobody has yet been fined or prosecuted for this (as it would not really be in the public interest the vast majority of the time I imagine).

They do send a reminder and it says it on the licence.
