    Driving thru West Europe

I am planning a trip to Western Europe by car, i.e. from London - Brugge - Amsterdam - Brussels - Paris - London

Anyone done something similar? Does it work out better than flying/train etc?
And finally, what are the hidden costs (not looking at insurance, car breakdown etc), rather things like ferry crossings, motorway tolls etc

Hey, Ive done it a few times. there are a lot of toll roads in france and even after i set my sat nav to avoid them I still stumbled upon a few and they aint cheap!! with ryanair and the other cheap airlines around you could totally fly to those places for cheaper but the car is so much more fun!! the ferry from dover to calais isnt expensive Ive paid from £20 - £60. Only thing Id advise you about is add about an hour onto any estimated time your sat nav says... traffic, wrong turns, petrol fill ups, rest stops add precious time to the journey!!! there are a few things you need e.g. high viz jacket is compulsory and the beam converters but if you type into google there are loads of websites to help you!! drive you'll have a blast and see things you would if you just hopped on and off a train!!!

Hidden costs break down cover for europe car insurance for europe. Health insurance for europe only some have agreement to pay full or partially for any injuries.

Austria and switzland you need a vingette to drive on the motor ways. Is like £5-£10.

Don't drive in france like above guy its pointless and expensive. Though i drove to paris what a joke lol.

Didn't come across any toll roads else where though i needed a new set of tyres after racing in the san marino mountains, what a rush in the pitch black too. Brakes started smoking at the bottom.

    ^good side, nice routes

might as well go by eurostar if thats the only places you are going to. They are only 1-2 hours apart

plane would take much lomger once you include getting to the airport, check-in etc.

For now, i want to keep it short, i.e. only those countries

I have tried to calculate teh cost based upon some feedback here and some research done online. It works out almost the same in fact.

Maybe if i add in more destinations, then it will work out cheaper

Better value for money you mean. Its not something you get the time or chance to do many times in your life. So squeeze in as many as you can. If you like any of the cities you can decide to fly there later in life. Off to vienna for my honey moon from my time there.

Cost me £2.5k to visit all the locations i did on my own. stayed at a few plush hotels, a hostel in paris quite a few camp sites but mostly slept in my car. I could have done it cheaper though.

When you slept in the car, how did you do this???

As in where did you park the car, how did you know you were going to be safe.
