    Dropped laptop

Just dropped my laptop from the armchair, screen has just been wiped off, all the ink? has spilt inside the screen. I have never backed up the files and now unable to access any of the files. I shall take it to a PC shop and see what gadgets are avaiable to access whats left if anything. I am so angry with myself, £500 down the crapper and two years of important files I can't get hold of. More importantly website addresses that I had collected, many of which I cannot remember.

Just a heads up to those of you that read this post to make sure you save your files.

You should be able to just take out your hardrive from the bottom or side and plug it into another laptop or use a cable to connect it to a desktop PC. The screen braking doesnt mean your hardrive is broken. In fact the HDD would probably be the last thing to brake.

What is the model? Could try replacing the screen yourself which will be easier option. Or take the Harddrive out and put it into an external case where you can connect it to another pc and get the files off it that way.

Or connect the laptop to a monitor via VGA if the Laptop still works. Many ways you can recover your documents without costing too much

connect a vga cable from the laptop to your tv with a vga socket. Or simply connect a pc monitor to the vga socket on the laptop.

I have tried using a HD cable to connect to the telly but it aint working. I am so dumb with technology. I shall surfing the Comet and Currys website tomorrow to find a replacement.

All of your documents and websites on the laptop should remain okay, you kist need to get the information off the hard drive

Pull out the battery and reseat it, plug in the mains power

    Try the VGA cable method.

If it turns on, all lights up (Fan makes noises...ect) Then it should display something on the tv screen whether it loads up or shows blue screen of death. Something should come up

I wouldnt take the laptop to a repair place. Not unless you want to waste money. You might awsell buy another laptop, and swap the hard drives over. VEry easy to do on laptops.

Then sell the broken laptop on ebay, you should get quite a bit of money on there for it. (spare parts)

Try reseating the ram, it may have shook loose.

mine fell off the sofa yesterday i was lucky though, the only thing that happened to mine was all the dust that was under the keys was all over the screen when i opened it. was ashamed by all the dust, lol
i hope you get all your data restored somehow op. as other people have suggested i'd either hook it up to a monitor or take the hard drive out

If the OP isn't technically minded, this isn't a great suggestion as it will not boot up in another laptop (unless identical model) due to different drivers, BIOS etc.

sure, but my point was, the files are still there (and can be accessed via other methods), unless the knock killed the drive too, but I reckon it would be fine.

Well that is one lesson your have learnt !

Well you are going to buy a new lap top any way so buy a hard drive docking station for a 2.5" drive. I had a similar problem. All you do is plug the docking station into the new computer, place the hard drive (which you have removed from your broken lap top) into the caddy. The new computer will then recognise the hard drive (just the same as a usb pen drive) and you will have access to all your files - but not the programs - you will haev to re-install the programs onto your new computer.
I just Googled a usb docking station, lowest price was £7... so good luck!

I have just used the VGA on both the TV and another old laptop but nowt is happening. Because I had a password on the laptop surely I would need to bypass that before I can switch screens F5 etc. All I get is a black screen.
