I,ve got the same problem, broken hinge.
Found a web site that repairs them www.ps2laser.co.uk
Looks like the cost would be £39.95 plus £6.99 p/p

Does this seem reasonable?

If you can't or don't want to go down the DIY route then Nintendo UK do repairs. Sometimes they have been known to do them for free too ! (Don't bank on the though)

I'll see if I can dig out the details and will post it back here.

More to come but here's the address:

thanks i suppose if youcan dig out an email addy no harm in asking the question

OK if you have a look at this link it will give you the info you need. DS's are known for hinges breaking, could it not be possible that this happened "just like that" and should be repaired under warranty ?????
Worth a try

The warranty is irrelevant.
You should've taken it to the store that you purchased it from 1st and seen what they said.

I sent mine off to Nintendo when the hinges on one side came apart. Got repaired free of charge. I didnt even need to prove it was within its warrenty (though in my case it was).

Just give them a call for the details of where to send it to....and tell a porky if asked when bought!

My daughter dropped hers and broke the case at the right hand hinge..

I have just got it back after having it recased into a shock case ( these are reputedly better than the original cases - stronger hinges and better speaker cavities) . It was done by a seller on ebay ( tommytoetruck) . I posted it on Monday and it was back on Friday. He charges £34.99 inc return postage to recase it in any colour shock case ( £5 extra if you want the chrome case).
Take a look at the colours available :

My daughter's DS looks better than a new one now. The Chrome case ( with a matt black inner) looks very classy and stylish. I can highly recommend these cases ( whether you fit one yourself or have it done for you).

You can recase the DS yourself. But after looking at the tutorials on youtube, i thought i better let someone else do it. The tutorial is 4 x 10 minute videos ( so thats 40 minutes for someone who knows exactly what they are doing - it looked very fiddly)

Saint if you're going to write things like that you really need to explain it a bit better. I know what you're hinting at but the OP may well not and will be totally confused.

To be honest in this situation I can't see any company doing anything other than referring the buyer to the manafacturer.
The child dropped the console and broke it. The console hasn't broken because it was not fit for purpose.
If the console had still been in warranty then the OP could have possibly tried the retailer but even then I think they would have referred him to Nintendo had he spoken the truth.

Nintendo offer a very fair repair service and the OP would save a lot of hassle to contact them an see what they say. As I said before, substantiated by Guv, Nintendo quite often will do a repair free of charge of they know it's a common fault/occurence.
In this case it is.

IMHO the OP will fair better with Nintendo although as I wrote earlier I do understand what you were hinting at

But its not irrelevant. The shop wouldn't do anything. In fact that was my first point of call - and they just said contact Nintendo. SOGA wont cover you for dropping something or mishandleing that caused the damage. It could be argued its a design fault, but can you really be bothered going to trading standards when there is an easy option open to you?

Fair play to Nintendo. Its a shame other manufacturers dont offer the same good service.

After two unaswered e mails finally rang Nintendo and they are going to repair it for £30.50. They give you a price and ref no. then send you a pre- paid lable to send it to them. Should get it back within the week.. I don't suppose this is a bad price to pay as postage each way is included.

Just an update, got my daughters DS back good as new, took just 1 week.:)
