dvd drive bodge to external HD caddy?

Help!! My vostro from the £316 deal has suffered failure of the DVD drive, and before I can return it for repair I need to install the original version of Vista it shipped with now I believe it can boot from a usb drive so my question is:

If I connect a DVD-Rom to the connections that are inside one of the external HD caddys I have will this work? I know in theory it should, I know it wont fit into the caddy but as this is only a temp set-up it will be ok!

Please someone tell me this will work!!!!(but only if its true!)

It will most likely work but tbh as its a hardware fault i'd send it back as is. Whether you buy a machine with an OS pre installed or not, you're under no legal obligation to keep or use said OS. The only way warranty could be refused would be if the company could prove that the replacement OS did the damage. Not going to happen imho ;-)

What does this do and where do you do it? If its anything to do with the recovery partition thats long gone!

can u not just loan or borrow an external optical drive for a day?, ask yr local pc shop they might rent u one.
OR get a usb flash drive make it bootable, and use someone elses pc to copy the os install files to it

dont think thts what he wants to do, he just wants to re install but haveing a duff cd/dvd drive is preventing him from doing that
ps earlier edit seems to have dissapeared??, the answer is yes it should work but watch the jumper settings on back it its ide (flat cable 2" wide),
end of cable set to master, middle of cable = slave
do this while pc is off

Maybe not but its so much faster installing XP from a USB stick than with DVD or CD, takes a fraction of the time.

yeah but that article is about arranging a system to boot from an xp installation on the flash drive,

Sorted! Somehow the BIOS had been affected and disbled the dvd drive so no need for repair I forgot I had upgraded the BIOS from A01 to A05 using the download from the Dell site:oops:. Never gave it a second thought, then the idea popped into my head to enter BIOS and restore default settings as a last hope! Job done! Also I tried the external DVD adaption out of curiosity and it does indeed work!
