    dylesxia screening

a close friends child has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia, strange thing is that during her whole life she herself has never ever been tested!

anyway - so she enquired and was told that as she works it cant be done for free, and that she would have to put anything up to £1000 to get tested now privatelly as an adult. (her child was tested / diagnosed for free through school).

anyone know if there are any schemes, or service provisions which would let her get tested for much less than this.

its money she cant afford, especially wth this credit crunch palova

Because when we remove a certain reported post, there's little point leaving the references to as they make no sense, so we remove the post & the quotes that aren't related to the thread - that way the thread still makes sense (hopefully) to the OP

    Ok, thanks sigma

Should be able to get it done a lot more cheaply than that. Where does she live? (I'm a Special Needs co-ordinator in Sheffield)

surely if the adult was dyslexic then it would have come out at some time during her time in school therefore why does she needs to be screened because it is obvious that she isn't dyslexic and if she thinks she is then why be screened and pay out that money just to be proven right ?

Lots of dyslexic people were missed, as dyslexia was seen as a myth by many people in education until about 20 years or so ago. Even now there are some people who are dyslexic and who have left school recently who were not dyslexia screened.
The advantages of being screened are :
    it is a disability
it sets many people's minds at rest to find out that they are dyslexic. It is frequently the case that dyslexic people have very low self esteem as they have been told, or fear, that they are stupid. Finding out that they have a specific learning difficulty is very important for these people.

Shame she's not nearer to me. I am a specialist teacher and qualified to do screening.

perhaps being dyslexic then has made your vocabulary a bit limited by what you said above - i was stating that if he/she thought he/she was dyslexic why have to pay out all that money to know that you arem after all as an adult is it going to make his/her life any better will it get this person extra help - if not then maybe it is better to weigh up the pros and cons of paying out the money - i am not dyslexic and do not have any insight into this condition but to be honest your reply is the only one i have disregarded but the others who have replied have actually made sense and for people who have not idea about this condition may well look at it in a different way now

Not always the case,i was doing a hnc in college and i thought it was time to be screened,as i have always found things difficult in school,They were great and it turned out i am dyslexic,at the age of 32.Kids can easy hide things and me personally did cause i didnt want to appear stupid. Also being a student its free.
