E3 2017 - Dawn of Hypergeddon, 2 Weeks Remain

14
Found 28th May 2017
14 days until Microsoft's E3 show, 15 days until Sony's E3 show, and 15 days until Nintendo's E3 Direct. Whoever wins doesn't matter because we the gamers ultimately win...

Unless all three announce they are going free to play, games as a service from now on. But think positive!

MICROSOFTY

What Will Happen:
- Scorpio, including final name and price
- Forza 7, in its best form with the power of Scorpio
- Sea of Thieves, perhaps a release date as well
- Crackdown 3: Finally the game to show the power of the cloud?
- State of Decay 2: Hopefully a full fat reveal
- Something new with Halo but not Halo 6 (Halo 6 not at E3 2017)

*third-party showings*
- Middle Earth: Shadow of War on Scorpio
- New Assassin's Creed reveal on Scorpio

Likely To Happen:
- Ori and the Blind Forest sequel (leak suggests it exists)
- Some showing of VR on Scorpio, perhaps with Fallout 4 VR edition

SORNY

What Will Happen
- Most important of all, more info on GOTG aka Knack 2: The Knackening
- Sucker Punch's new IP, after 8 years of Infamous games
- Big show on Sony Bend's open world survival Days Gone
- More on the reimagined God of War, perhaps with a release date
- More on Spider-Man
- Something on GT Sport no doubt
- New trailer for Kojima's Death Stranding, likely showing off the next big actor who will star in it

*third party showings*
- COD, of course (aka the time to slip away and make a cuppa)
- More on Destiny 2

Likely To Happen
- Showcase of the Horizon DLC that Guerrilla are busying themselves with
- Square Enix to come on stage and troll us with fan faves we all know won't come out this decade
- Perhaps new stuff on RDR2

NINTENDOH

What Will Happen
- More on Super Mario Odyssey
- More on Splatoon 2
- More on ARMS
- More on Fire Emblem Warriors

... Unfortunately, those are the only known factors so far

Likely To Happen
- A heck of a lot of first party games, since Nintendo has kept their cards close to their chest
- More on Xenoblade 2
- Whatever the hell Retro Studios have been busy on for three years
- Pikmin 4: Nintendo has acknowledged its existence but who knows when it will be revealed...
- Smash news: A brand new entry or a remix ala Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?
- Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Perhaps with HD Rumble features

... That's what's we know or is up in the air, but what hopes do you have from the big three this E3?

Some personal hopes:

- Some revival of a classic IP owned by Microsoft. MechAssault, Crimson Skies, whatever. Something to make up for the cancellation of a new Phantom Dust and Scalebound.

- Something else from Rare. Not all the staff are on Sea of Thieves and it was teased a few months back that Rare has a few projects on the go albeit at the prototype stage. Would love to see a platformer.

- Brand new non-Souls like IP from Miyazaki and FROM. Would love to see them reimagine Tenchu the same way they reimagined King's Field with Demon's Souls. Although it is looking like they are gonna first give that treatment to the Armored Core series.

- New Jumping Flash! for PSVR (why is this still not a thing?)

- New project from Japan Studio. It is quite a large organisation with multiple projects being worked on at once. In the last year they had busied themselves on Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian but I'm hoping something new from them. Like a new JRPG.

- A Kid Icarus: Uprising sequel, only this time without the godawful hand cramp. If not that then a revival of StarTropics, the same way Kid Icarus was revived.

- F-ZEROOOOOOOOOO... yeah, I know it ain't happening.

PlayStation Nation will rule E3 once again!
Agreed with @hass123 I think playstation will dominate again at E3 and Im an xbox gamer
Really pulling for MS this year. Want to see GAMES from them, 'Ori 2' would be great.

I think Sony will unveil a Greatest Hits/Platinum range, the time is about right I think. They've also pinched the marketing deal for Fifa so they'll make a fuss about Legends exclusivity on PS4 until 2020 IIRC.

Bethesda have 2 new games to show. Probably the 'Skyrim' HD remaster (and Switch version) and The next 'Wolfenstein' game. Maybe single player expansions for 'Dishonored 2' and 'DooM' if I'm lucky.

A CG trailer for the new 'Batman' from WB, and maybe a peep at what Rocksteady are doing.

Very likely The Evil Within 2 will be one of the new announcements from Bethesda. TEW sold well, was received decently enough, and Mikami's Tango studio are currently making a new game built on UE4 (so at the very least it won't have the technical problems TEW suffered). Also, apparently a job listing for QA on a Psycho Break 2 was leaked (TEW is called Psycho Break in Japan).

Good call. I'd forgotten it was a Bethesda Game, got it into my head it was EA.

Oh, so I only was semi-joking about the SE trolling us with fan faves that won't come out this decade but it appears SE has took that job to heart.

Yeah, so the first part of FFVII Remake is gonna release for PS5 in 2020... probably 2021.

CyberConnect2 usually brings the goods and on time with their production so they must have messed up really bad for SE to pull out and bring development in house. That or SE demanded too much of CC2 with too little. Either way, it isn't good news and shows how it is nowhere near release despite it being announced two years ago.

Surely by then they'd be looking at PS5? I'd expect further delays.

Honestly, they never should have went ahead with the project in the first place and instead focused on new FF games with a revised outlook on scope. VII is immense in scale when trying to transport it into a more true to scale scope, so if they're having trouble with making it even after splitting it into parts (which was supposed to make the development more manageable) then it does not bode well for the release of all parts.

This is going to be another Versus / XV all over again. Or, if they do manage to release part 1 there is a danger of it becoming like HL2 where things don't go to plan for the next episodes, where development takes a lot longer than expected on the next part, and eventually it leads to a situation where the dev is just happy to leave it be because the full cost and effort to release all episodes just isn't worth it anymore (and the drive to do it has just vanished).

I can't disagree with that. I enjoyed the more traditional 'I am Setsuna" and the 'Bravely' series. i think they need to go back to their roots really.

This whole "games as a service" Idea isn't going to suit there core audience. They've gone from specialising in 40+ hour JRPGs to wanting to do what? 2-3 hour episodic stuff and F2P multiplayer?? I'm not even sure what "Games as a service" even means. I think we'll see a massive scaling back of SqEnix between this and the next gen, I don't think they know what they're doing.

They want to do what Ubisoft and Activision does (and what EA now states they want to do). Offer a base game that goes through monthly content updates, culminating in a major paid update once a year, every year. See: Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny, The Division.

The way the model is supposed to work is you essentially remove the big upfront dev budgets that full release games and its sequels costs and you replace it with a far more efficient and ultimately cheaper way to do business. An additional advantage is (like with free to play mobile games) you can gauge if there is going to be enough of a dedicated userbase for your game very early on and if there isn't cut your losses at a minimum (whereas with a full fledged release there's no such safety net, you spend three years or more and then hope you have the audience at the end of it to buy it).

Basically, games as a service is TV whereas full fledged games are movies. And games as a service shares the same advantages as TV does over movie production.

The thing is, SE had that exact game and was a perfect fit for the games as a service model: Hitman and its episodic seasons. The dev of which they now want to sell off. So.... it really makes no sense why they are gung-ho on games as a service when they're cutting off their first successful attempt at it.

This direction will probably fall by the wayside in time, like SE's MMO direction a couple of years back. Back then, their intent was to take all their major properties and turn it into MMO. Examples given were Deus Ex, Hitman, Tomb Raider, and Sleeping Dogs. Only one of those got the treatment (Sleeping Dogs now renamed as Triad Wars) and it was cancelled before officially launching. It's clear SE had given up on the MMO for all properties direction, so it's likely they will do the same again here once they see games as a service being incompatible with many of their core properties.

Have to say I am shocked no leaks have happened so far. MS and Sony are usually leaky as hell in the weeks to E3. They must have hired some ninjas from Nintendo to keep a tight lid on things.
Let's not forget Bloodborne 2 VR and being able to change our PSN names. Those two things are certs

I'm sure we'll see something next week. Too early for leaks at the moment.

Yeah, PSN ID change is a good idea. I could do with changing my ID.
