Hi guys, it's Earth Hour 2010 tonight at 8.30, the idea is that you switch off your lights in your house for 1 hour, This is a personal choice for me and entirely up to your self if you care to join in,

Never had street lights on our estate, you should count yourself lucky you've had any at all!

Maybe so, but still better not to polute our air supply no???

I think the whole earth hour thing is a bit of a con though and many people see it as having done their bit when they should be saving energy for the whole year, not just one hour!

Heard someone on the radio said he was turning off all equipment that wasn't needed at his factory for an hour. If it's not needed then turn it off all the time!!!!

Thanks for the heads up, i will switch an extra one on tonight just for you. :w00t:

And remember that clocks are going forward too, so any figures they give of energy saved is going to be influenced by the fact that people are going to bed early anyway (not everyone of course, but many people will which would see a decent saving on energy regardless of whether earth hour was on or not!).

thats awful! we live close to town and just off a busy main road and its … thats awful! we live close to town and just off a busy main road and its REALLY dark in the street even with the house lights on.

We also pay full council tax £1,115, a town council tax, a village tax of £15 AND a private estate management fee of £360 per year. The private estate management have however offered to pay and fit a PIR flood light to anyone who wants one, but then we have to pay the electricity for anyone wondering past our house.

Oh and we're also by a main through road, speed limit on our estate though is 15mph.

wont be doing it, mainly because i wont able to see where im going if i do

I'd happily do it if I was going out or something :p, but since I'm in I don't want to sit in the dark like a weirdo. Plus I'm watching a film and would rather not do my eyes in.

    iam with you fizzie

the air will be just as polluted, they can't just switch off the power stations as demand drops.
they factor in the demand and keep extra capacity on standby but even if everybody in the country turned the lights off for the hour they would still have the same number of power stations outputting and the same amount of CO2 would be coming out

Well I doubt that's true to be honest. Reducing the energy needed will reduce the amount of fossil fuels that'll need to be burnt etc.

My point was that we should do something major to make the air better, not just turn lights off for an hour.

Your point is kind of like saying that driving 80 miles would still produce the same amount of co2 as driving 100 miles. Given the same conditions you'd create more obviously!

no you're misunderstanding me, what i'm saying is that they have to forecast demand. if they need more power they cannot just turn on more power stations, they have to forecast the demand and have that much power (and spare capacity) as they didn't know how many people were going to actually turn their lights off last night they would have had to still have the normal amount of capacity available. so exactly the same amount of fossil fuels would have been burned last night as a normal saturday night even if millions of people had turned their lights off. now if everybody regularly turned off the lights for this period then they would lower available capacity and then less fuel would be burned, but as a one off it has no effect whatsoever

It's quite predictable. They've got several years worth of data now to go off as to how much energy is used on that night.

    sorry but the experts disagree

    telegraph.co.uk/ear…tml

and not only that but its also not predictable at all, the result has varied considerably every time its been done, and in most countries its getting less effective each year.

Maybe you're right then, I think it's based on them being really inefficient powering the surge after the event.

Either way, with all the coverage too it's bound not to save energy.

its not so much inefficiency, its the very nature of power stations. you can't just turn them on & off. also their output isn't that controlable. the fact that the percentage taking part falling is symptomatic of the growing disbelief in manmade climate change. the IPCC admitting "tweaking" the reports to only show the results they want certainly doesn't help. TBH the UN and world govts would be better off spending the billions they currently spend on research into carbon emmissions on actually preparing for the climate changes themselves.
