Ebay - do returns need to be trackable?

I bought something on ebay and the seller has sent me a similar item by accident.

They are sending out the correct thing tomorrow, and have asked me to return the wrong item to them and they will refund the postage paid - all fine so far.

However, they have asked me to use the cheapest possible postage, whereas I think it needs to go back tracked / recorded / signed for to prove it got back to them - they have messaged me to say that they are happy to risk it.

Surely if the item doesn't arrive it will be down to me despite what they have said? Should I send it tracked anyway?

If you haven't raised a dispute with ebay and are sending back as aranged … If you haven't raised a dispute with ebay and are sending back as aranged between you and seller, then send as he asks, but wait for correct item first.If there is no dispute flagged with ebay, there is no need to send trackable.What is the value of the item?



Low - £8.50 which I guess is why they don't want to spend out on return postage...

That is a very good point about the risk! They have actually said
'!m prepared to take the risk, i have sent out many untracked packets and have only had a very small number of non arrival claims.' I just think it really ought to be tracked, and it was their mistake to send the wrong thing in the first place so no reason for them not to pay the right postage...

If you haven't raised a dispute, then the only risk is the seller not … If you haven't raised a dispute, then the only risk is the seller not getting his goods back.If there is no dispute, then e-bay won't be interested.There will be no risk to you, 'cos no dispute means no need to return anything.You are just dealing with the problem amicably and as the seller is going to re-imburse you, I would do as he asks.



Can the seller raise a dispute later if they don't get the goods back? I am going to post them back, am just worried if they get lost on the post ...

But surely if they don't get them back they won't refund you? Or send you the replacement (if they haven't done so already!! I'd send it 2nd class and put a signed for on it, it costs about 60-70p extra

Hmm, but most of us know lots of Ebay sellers don't do what they say when they say they will!

They have already sent out the replacement they said (the first item arrived within 2 days of ordering so they are quick) - I am going to do what AberdeenDad & Jumpingphil said & wait for those to arrive first - they do have good feedback & have done a lot of transactions so I do believe them.

They have also already left me good feedback, so I might wait for the replacement and then just send the other thing back as they requested. Thanks Jumpingphil for advice - you are right, they can't dispute it really & it is them that will lose out if it does get lost in post!

Well just send it back normal post (2nd class) and get a certificate of posting. Then it's cheap for them and worst case scenario it doesn't turn up you can claim against royal mail.

UPDATE - the new item arrived (again really quickly) and I have sent back the wrong item as requested via packet post. And OF COURSE I have left them good feedback because they sorted it out really quickly and in a friendly way!
