Well with no competition they can charge what they like. :-(

imagine my horror when i sold my reading festival tickets at face value + 10 last year.... meant i got less than face value price for the tickets

Why is there no competition? I heard about tazbar but that doesn't seem to have much traffic, I don't know any other online auctions sites. It is pretty disgusting how much ebay make nowadays, in your case around 10%, but they get away with it. :x

all i have to say about ebay this use it as a back up plan if it does not sell in this forum

also paypal fees are very high aswell

paypal are owend by ebay. Just have a very high Postage price, and low buy it now price. they dont take money from the postage

also the reserve fees are a F'in joke

but sometimes needed

If QXL had not made such a mess then there would be an alternative.

I have hated QXL since back in 2000 I sold a PS2 and a buyer paid me 5.10pm then phoned me up harassing me at 8am nextday demanding to know where item was as QXL gave them my home number(which I never even gave to QXL)

Had phone calls every day for2 weekswith buyer threatening to send police, and to send friends round to smash house.

you should have sent item then lol (only joking not funny i guess)

Methinks we need a new, well-thought out rival.

I have a plan.

anyone who makes a rival for ebay that doesnt require you to use ebay i will love for ever. seriously i reckon theres some money to be made in it.

I will only use eBay for purchases whenever I can help it. Selling is just too expensive.
I used to use Paypal a lot too, but, again, I much prefer BT now as it is far cheaper.
eBay are just pricing themselves out of the market.

To price yourself out of the market you need to have competitors.

Can you advertise your widget to such a large audience cheaper than ebay?

seriously? no, tbh I dont think there's money to be made. i mean, ebay only make $300m a quarter, you can gt that much doing a paper round (jk).

Why don't ebay have any competitors here? Well, look at the auction sites that tried to compete, and guess who owns them now... set up an auction site, get 100,000 regular users, and you'll have a couple of million in the bank within five years- c/o ebay.

Now thats a plan, it wont be easy and it would cost alot to advertise because word of mouth aint enough im afraid.

great idea and i would input all my spare time (which is around about 2/3's of the whole day lol)

If you serious about it PM me and we can start to get the ball rolling

try ebid?

The main problem is without backers it'd cost a hell of a lot of money- the legal setup costs could run to five figures. The only way to do it with low startup costs is via a forum- much as we have here- which wd essentailly be free. As for advertising, it is key- but possible to create for free. I took my first website, which was incredibly niche (potential target market of less than a million) to 500,000 hits a year very quickly through innovative use of youtube, myspace, and ebay.

My top ebay trick for advertising is sell advertising space there. If your website sells pez dipensers, an ebay search for pez will bring up a listing stating 'buy advertising space on my pez website'. You might sell ad space, you might not- but you'll get one hell of a lot of interested click-thrus from people who are interested in pez without breaking any ebay rules. The best advertising you can get on a budget of £2 a week!

Back to business though, i'm currently initiating a fundraising project which raises money for primary schools (i'm a teacher) of which 100% goes to the schools. This'll take *all* my time from Jan-July, but if you or anyone decides to work on some sort of project, I have a great and essentially free marketing strategy that i'd be happy to help implement, and which could attract the neccessary numbers fairly quickly...
Am also happy to help kick around business ideas

btw if anyone is involved in a primary school or PTA and wants a link to my fundraiser (launching in Jan) pm me

I used to sell on ebay quite a lot, but haven't bothered in months now...there's just no point when, even if your item sells 'well' you only make a few squid on it. I'd rather keep it/give it away/bin it that give ebay money for nothing in return for me.

The only people that could be decent rivals to Ebay are Google, I personally would love to see Ebay/Paypal knocked off their perch.

The way to help there be a competitor to ebay is to sign up to the others and start buying! If more people actually purchased from ebid or tazbar then there would be more sellers...

I F***** hate Ebay/Paypal's fees

Yahoo have the top auction site in Japan- ebay have a very small market share there.

I don't doubt that, but you are paying through the nose for that privilage ;-)
Honestly, the fees are too much now IMO. That is why i'd much prefer using the FS/FT forum on here on the proviso that I sell my item for as much or more than I can get, net, on eBay.

So true. I am surprised google have not jumped on board and launched their own auction site.

The whole 'don't be evil' maxim kind of rules google out...

Ebay dont have their finger in every pie though!

In New Zealand a homegrown auction site (trademe.co.nz) has killed ebays NZ incarnation.

Good for them I say!

They also cunningly increased prices when they moved from UK to Luxembourg. VAT is only 15% there but prices didn't come down to reflect that.

Ive never sold anything on ebay, but thinking about it. They have a 10p listing today (via paypal).

Please explain what that actually means in money terms? Does it cost you 10p then what other added extra's is on top of that?

10p insertion fee. 10000000s of extra items on ebay = yours probably sells for less than it would if you'd listed another time and paid 50p insertion instead. You still have to pay 15p for gallery picture, you still have to pay your final value fees and you still have to pay your paypal fees, you still have to pay the same to post the item.

The 10p listing days are only useful imho on more expensive BIN items.

Thanks, I may try listing something today. If time prevails.

If I try it and find its not worth it, I will know not to try again.

Thanks

Never got round to listing anything. Wondering now if it is worth it

Never sold anything either but surely you could just lump in your selling fees with the P&P as a form of "handling" charge. You ought to treat your transaction costs separately from what you want to earn from the sale and even if you don't know what the sale will earn you and thus finally cost you, you must be able to estimate it.:?

A lot of people do do that, I usually add a few quid on to my P+P charges, but it also has its down side in that a lot of ebayers don't like it...or aren't sellers themselves so don't understand it. My parents for example, despite me explaining it to them, won't buy something if it has a ridiculous p+p charge.

yep, i've put a bunch of higher priced items on there. I don't expect to sell more than three or four things, as my start prices are what I expect to sell them for- but anything that goes is more cash in my pocket.

I sold my car (cavalier) on ebay about 2 years ago,it went for a whopping
£100 :? the buyer was well happy when he came to pick it up, and to make me even more happy was i paid nearly £20 in fees:-(

Google should buy eBid or Tazbar and start to rival them using an extended version of Google Checkout.

Google and Amazon will probably take eBay down at some point. They have a strained relationship as it is. Google is already very powerful as a search engine alongside other highly useful services and Amazon have excellent marketplace know-how... together, they can start something more special.

there is another uk based (i think) auction site call cqout. although i hate the set up of that
